Tactics[]

Yumi Horse Archers are individually costlier and take more population than their foot soldier equivalents, Yumi Archers, but they are also more resilient, faster, and have a higher damage.

In the late game, when players are at maximum population, the base DPS per population cost of the Yumi Horse Archer is 3, while that for Yumi Archers is 2.67, making the mounted version 12.5% more population-efficient at dealing damage. On the other hand, the effective hit point pools per population cost of Yumi Horse Archers is 33.33 for hack and 40 for pierce, while that for Yumi Archers is 38.24 for both, making the foot version more resilient in pitched battles. Yumi Horse Archers are cheaper per population cost compared to Yumi Archers.

When facing opponents with strong anti-cavalry or anti-archer options, the player needs to protect the Yumi Horse Archers by moving away damaged units and healing them, or pivoting to Yumi Archers if they cannot take favorable fights. Against the Egyptians, this unit is a poor choice overall, as Camel Riders do bonus damage to both ranged soldiers and cavalry, making them deal a tremendous amount of damage to Yumi Horse Archers.

This unit excels in the Heroic Age with a quick timing attack, rushing in to kill units like workers, Pharaohs, and healers, then running away. It works well to harass enemy infantry and try to force them out of position, or sneak in and devastate enemy trade, then make a hasty escape.

Since it is improved by both cavalry and archer technologies, the Yumi Horse Archer is notable as the Japanese human soldier that benefits from the greatest number of myth technologies. As such, each major god has good options for upgrading this unit:

  • Tsukuyomi's Bushidō bonus improves their attack, and he provides the Classical Age goddess Inari Ōkami, with Sashimono Bannermen improving hit points and attack. Both Heroic Age options are beneficial, with Hachiman's Golden Kite granting much higher damage (suitable for prolonged direct combat), while Fūjin's Gale's Fury improves movement and attack speed (good for hit-and-run). In the Mythic Age, Watatsumi's Asymmetrical bows improves attack and range.
  • Susanoo provides the option of Minakatatomi in the Classical Age, whose technologies make the unit cheaper and improves its range and attack. He can then follow up with Fūjin in the Heroic Age and Watatsumi in the Mythic Age.
  • While Amaterasu lacks Watatsumi and any direct bonuses, she has both Minakatatomi and Hachiman, which can make her Yumi Horse Archers lethal in the early-to-mid-game.

History[]

The yumi, a Japanese longbow, was typically seven to nine feet in length and could be used both on foot and on horseback. What makes the yumi particularly distinctive is its asymmetrical design – the grip is positioned off-center, closer to the lower half of the bow. Constructed with a wooden core and strips of bamboo laminated together, this unique design made the yumi an exceptionally powerful and deadly weapon for samurai, onna-musha, and other warriors to wield in battle. Horse archers using the yumi enjoyed an uncanny combination of immense firepower, agility, and mobility. In Japan, the art of archery was known as Kyūdō, and it was regarded with great seriousness and discipline.

The term yumi also has mythological significance. One of the famous legendary weapons in Japanese mythology is Ikuyumiya, or "the life bow-and-arrows." It originally belonged to the god Susanoo, but was stolen by his son-in-law, Ōkuninushi, who later returned the legendary weapon.
