This article is about the god power unit in Age of Mythology: Retold - Immortal Pillars. For another similarly named unit, see Qinglong.

Legendary dragon that summons wind, rain, and calls down divine thunder. Can only be attacked by ranged units. Attacks with thunderbolts that inflict damage in a large area. Good against everything.
—In-game description

The Yinglong (traditional Chinese: 應龍; simplified Chinese: 应龙) is a flying myth unit in Age of Mythology: Retold - Immortal Pillars available to the Chinese if they Age up to the Mythic Age with Huangdi and invoke the god power Yinglong's Wrath anywhere. One of the very few winged dragons in Chinese mythology, he is a legendary rain and lightning dragon who shoots thunderbolts while his rain benefits Farms and slows down enemies underneath him.

Special ability[]

  • Fury of Thunder (Charged): Unleashes two lightning attacks within a range of 10. Each deals 50 Divine Attack divine damage (2× multiplier vs. myth units, 0.1× vs. heroes) in an area of 6. Recharge time: 15 seconds.
  • Perpetual Rain (Passive): Grants +10% gathering rate to the player's Farms touched by the aura of radius 20.
  • Deluge (Charged): Summons a downpour at Yinglong's current location, slowing enemy units by 50% for 10 seconds within an area of 10. Also affects heroes, but not flying units. Recharge time: 30 seconds. (disabled since update 18.21333)
  • Its attack snares enemies.

Strategy[]

The Chinese analogue to the Norse Nidhogg, the Yinglong is a highly powerful and versatile myth unit, boasting high attack, hit points, and armor. First, his lightning bolts deal divine damage in a small area, ignoring armor and only being governed by his respective damage multipliers versus myth units and heroes. This allows him to deal major damage to multiple units at once, making him useful against everything except heroes. Yinglong can even attack Titans, although like all air units, he will take splash damage from a Titan while it attacks ground troops. Second, his rain boosts the gathering rate of Farms below him, providing the player an economic boost. This is especially useful considering that the Chinese Peasants are less efficient at resource-gathering than other worker units. Shennong's farming bonuses are even more helpful in this case. Yinglong's rain also slows down enemy units in a large area underneath him, allowing them to be more easily taken out by the player's ground troops. Lastly, being a flying unit, Yinglong can only be attacked by ranged units and fortifications.

Despite his high stats, Yinglong is not invincible. It is impossible for him to regenerate or be healed by most means, so sustained attacks will eventually finish him off. Groups of ranged heroes, especially the Son of Osiris, can easily deal major damage to him, even quickly and easily killing him if he's unsupported. All civilizations have access to ranged heroes: Greek and Chinese heroes can switch to a ranged attack when fighting flying units, the Egyptians can use Pharaohs and Priests, the Norse can train Godis in large numbers, and the Atlanteans can convert all of their ranged soldier units into heroes. Likewise, ranged myth units can also defeat Yinglong, albeit not without heavy losses.

Changelog[]

Immortal Pillars[]

  • Initially, Yinglong's Fury of Thunder special attack has a recharge time of 5 seconds. He also has an additional Deluge charged ability which slows enemy units by 50% for 10 seconds within an area of 10.
  • Yinglong can be healed by Shennong's Favored Land bonus.
  • With update 18.21333:
    • Yinglong's Fury of Thunder special attack has a recharge time of 15 seconds and his Deluge ability is temporarily disabled, although it still appears in the unit's command panel.
    • Yinglong can no longer be healed by Shennong's Favored Land bonus.

Mythology[]

Scientific name: Serpens maximus aquae
Size: 28' wingspan
Diet: Omnivorous

Yinglong is a yellow dragon that appears multiple times in Chinese mythology.

He assisted Fuxi in creating the core philosophical concept of the Bagua (Eight Trigrams) and helped Nüwa repair the heavens. During the great battle between Huangdi and Chiyou, Yinglong supported Huangdi, contributing to his victory.

Yinglong is also believed to have assisted in the creation of the world. It is said that the longest river in China, the Yangtze River, was drawn by Yinglong using his tail.

Trivia[]

  • Being a powerful god power "summon" like Nidhogg, Yinglong cannot be healed by healer units. Unlike Nidhogg, however, Yinglong can be healed by the Hesperides Tree, and could also be healed by Shennong's bonus on Favored Land.
    • This is no longer the case as of update 18.21333, which disabled Yinglong from being able to be healed by Shennong's Favored Land.
  • Its in-game Latin scientific name means "Greatest water serpent".
  • Due to a bug, Yinglong cannot be killed by Huang Zhaowu's Life Absorption ability. Instead, the attack will reduce him to 46 hit points and cause both units to get stuck in their respective animations. This can be exploited during Duel of the Deathless to "trap" Huang Zhaowu and defeat him using Fei Beasts to quickly win the scenario.
