Background[]
Taking place after the events of Fall of the Trident, The New Atlantis, and Pillars of the Gods, the campaign focuses on events unfolding in Japan. The player is situated into the middle of a Tengu invasion of a village in Izumi, Japan. Yasuko, a farmer girl and daughter of Tatsuro, discovers a magical spear named Ame-no-Nuboko handed to her by a dying soldier. However, she soon discovers not only the spear's magical powers, but also that a ruthless warlord named Kagemasa wants the spear for himself in an attempt to imprison the sun goddess Amaterasu.

Yasuko: The main protagonist, a peasant girl who was entrusted by an injured Clan Member to keep the Ame-no-Nuboko safe.
Tatsuro: A simple farmer, and the father of Yasuko.
Harumoto: The daimyo of Izumi village trying to protect his realm.
Kagemasa: The primary antagonist, a powerful and ambitious warlord. He desires to rule over Japan with an iron fist, going as far as attempting to steal the Ame-no-Nuboko and even imprison Amaterasu so he can claim godhood for himself.
Magumo: Queen of the Jorogumo and a major antagonist, she bewitches the Tengu into attacking Yasuko's village and later desires the Ame-no-Nuboko for herself.
Sลjลbล: The Tengu king and a minor antagonist, he and his fellow Tengu are mind-controlled by Magumo into attacking Daimyo Harumoto's realm and retrieve the Heavenly Spear.
Yuki-Onna: A powerful yokai of the winter, she is bound by Magumo to serve her.
Abe-no-Seimei: A wise man of a village in a swamp, he requests help of the protagonist's party against the Kappa menace, and provides crucial information and supplies.
Shuten Doji: Leader of the Oni and a minor antagonist, he later joins forces with Kagemasa to help him steal the Ame-no-Nuboko.
Akari: The leader of the clan that guards the spear Ame-no-Nuboko, she watches over Yasuko during her journey and tells her the truth about the Ame-no-Nuboko and how it came to be.
Ajax,
Brokk, and
Eitri: These three were wandering the underground tunnels after wrapping up the crisis in China (as seen in Pillars of the Gods) to find their way back to their homelands, but became lost again and were found by Yasuko and her allies while they were sneaking into Kagemasa's base.
