—Age of Empires IV description |
The Wynguard Ranger is a light ranged infantry unit unique to the English in Age of Empires IV. It is produced in a batch of 6 as Wynguard Rangers at the Wynguard Palace.
Abilities[]
- Place Palings (Active): The Wynguard Ranger places down defensive palings. Enemy cavalry will be stunned for 2.5 seconds and receive 25 damage when trying to charge the Wynguard Ranger. Palings disappear upon moving. 30 second cooldown.
- Arrow Volley (Active, requires Arrow Volley): Activate to receive a 70% increase in attack speed for 5 seconds. 45 seconds cooldown.
Tactics[]
The Wynguard Ranger is a much more powerful alternative to the Longbowman, and can be considered an upgrade to it. It costs 27 more resources to train, but is created 80% faster. Rangers have the same abilities as Longbowmen, Place Palings and Arrow Volley. Having 9 range, it outranges all non-siege units and buildings. The Wynguard Ranger also has 30 more hit points and 4 more attack. Resources allowing, it should always be preferred over Longbowmen.
While the Ranger has the same weaknesses and strategies as the Longbowman, the higher stats allow for several key advantages. The much higher range and base damage allow better overall performance against units that the Longbow may struggle with, such as Horsemen, Men-at-Arms, and Knights. They should, however, still be wary of siege weapons like Mangonels, and be supported by durable front-line units to protect against their counters.
