—Age of Empires IV description |
The Wynguard Footman is a heavy melee infantry unit unique to the English in Age of Empires IV. It is produced in a batch of 6 as Wynguard Footmen at the Wynguard Palace. It is essentially a stronger Man-at-Arms.

Tactics[]
The Wynguard Footman is a much more powerful alternative to the Man-at-Arms, and can be considered an upgrade to it. In total resource cost per unit, it is actually cheaper (and much faster) to make Wynguard Footmen, although their cost emphasizes gold much more heavily. Pound for pound, the Wynguard Footman is the most powerful heavy infantry unit, aside from the Gilded Man-at-Arms, with the second highest hit points and damage. Over a standard Man-at-Arms, they have +100 hit points and +6 attack. They also boast an attack bonus against cavalry. While they have 2 less melee armor, this is offset by the +2 from Armor Clad, granting them the same armor as a generic Man-at-Arms, though less than an English one. Resources allowing, it should always be preferred over Men-at-Arms.
While the Footman has the same weaknesses and strategies as the Man-at-Arms, the higher stats allow for several key advantages. Their much higher damage and bonus against cavalry make them a much bigger threat to enemy Horsemen and Knights, and can replace the need for the English to make Spearmen to protect Longbowmen. Supporting Footmen with Longbowmen or Wynguard Rangers can protect them from Crossbowmen, but the player should still be wary of siege weapons like Mangonels.

Trivia[]
- Despite being an Imperial Age unit, they wield a Kite shield. These were more frequently used in the Norman Era and had largely been replaced by the age of gunpowder and plate armor. They also wield the same two-handed axe model as the Holy Roman Empire Men-at-Arms do (after researching Two-Handed Weapons but not Heavy Maces) using only one hand.
