The Wild Chicken is a huntable animal in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, added with update 141935. Unlike other huntables, they cannot be lured or pushed too far away, as they have limited movement and will remain close to their spawn point at all times. As such, they are best gathered with a Mill nearby, similar to Berry Bushes or Shore Fish. They appear in three color variations (white, brown, and black).
While Chickens tend to spawn in groups twice as large as equivalent groups of Deer, they have less than half the food provided by Deer. On the other hand, they also lose food at half the rate due to decay, compared to Deer. This means that two unupgraded Villagers can collect all the food from a Wild Chicken in a single trip, netting around 56 food (out of a total 65 food before decay). They also generally spawn closer to a player's starting Town Center than do Deer, somewhat mitigating their inability to be pushed towards drop sites.
In general, Wild Chickens tend to be a slower source of food than most huntables, but faster than foraging.
Trivia[]
- Wild chickens exist in real life as junglefowl, with the red junglefowl (a wild chicken found in the Indian subcontinent, parts of southern China, and Southeast Asia) specifically being an ancestor of the domesticated Chicken.
