The Wild Bactrian Camel is a Gaia animal introduced in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition that is available in the Scenario Editor.
Wild Bactrian Camels are visually identical to Bactrian Camels, but cannot be captured nor controlled by players, and have only 5 hit points compared to the Bactrian Camel's 50. Instead they behave in a manner similar to Deer, running away from any unit approaching them, but cannot be hunted by Villagers and hold no food. As a result, they are purely decorative.
This animal is also available in the Age of Empires game mode in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Return of Rome with the same attributes.
Trivia[]
- It was traditionally assumed that the Wild Bactrian Camel from Mongolia and Xinjiang was a feral form of the domestic Bactrian Camel (Camelus bactrianus) or heavily interbred with it, but genetic testing has revealed instead that it is a different species (C. ferus) that separated from the wild ancestor of the Bactrian Camel over one million years ago. The Wild Bactrian Camel is slightly smaller, with shorter hair, and a flatter head profile that gives its name in the Mongolian language: havtagai, "flat-head". It can also survive on saltier water than can be tolerated by even the Bactrian Camel.
