History

Nestled in the hills near the city of Lanzhou in the Gansu province of China, sits the White Pagoda. Built in honor of a well-known Lama of the Sa-skya-pa sect of Tibetan Buddhism who died of an illness in Lanzhou while on his way to meet Genghis Khan, the White Pagoda offers a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding landscape. Perched on the northern bank of the Yellow River, the White Pagoda was constructed during the Yuan Dynasty under the rule of Genghis Khan’s grandson, Kublai Khan. Destroyed by a violent earthquake, the iconic seven-story pagoda was rebuilt later by Emperor Yingzong during the Ming Dynasty, and has undergone extensive renovation and reconstruction during its history.

Standing at 17 meters high, the White Pagoda is remarkable for its architecture and presence. It possesses an all-white exterior, excepting the green-topped pinnacle, with images of Buddha on eight sides. Surrounded by a natural forest of remarkable beauty, the White Pagoda Park in which the structure resides is also host to three other historical complexes.
