—In-game description |
Wen Zhong (traditional Chinese: 聞仲; simplified Chinese: 闻仲) is a Chinese demigod hero in Age of Mythology: Retold - Immortal Pillars, exclusive to Shennong. He can charm enemy myth units like the Sage, but he cannot heal friendly units. He is based on the character of the same name from the Chinese mythological novel Fengshen Yanyi, translated as The Investiture of the Gods, and wields two sword-breakers and rides a black Qilin in battle, with his third eye opened on his forehead by decree of Yuhuang. He is available in the Mythic Age at the Imperial Academy.
Special ability[]
Sacred Hands (Passive): Can pick up Relics and deposit them at a Temple.
Replicate (Charged): Target an enemy myth unit to stun it and summon a mirror image to temporarily fight for you. (Stuns target myth unit and spawns a friendly copy of it for 12 seconds. Works on all myth units except the Titan, Nidhogg, and Yinglong, so it affects the Carnivora, Phoenix Egg, and Spider Egg. The mirror image persists for the duration even if Wen Zhong dies. Recharge time: 60 seconds)
- Switches to ranged attack when targeting airborne units.

Tactics[]
While the Sage is rather vulnerable and ineffective when not using his special ability, Wen Zhong is able to put up a better fight thanks to his higher attack and hit points, while the greater speed afforded by his Qilin mount makes him better able to choose his fights. Compared to the Sage, his Replication ability lasts somewhat longer, making him particularly dangerous to armies containing myth units, as the "mirror images" he casts can last long enough to deal real damage to the enemy, rather than simply being a momentary distraction as is usually the case. Otherwise, the ability works identically. Despite sharing one of the Sage's special abilities, and being mounted on a Qilin, he is not a healer.

Mythology[]
“ | Age: 2300 years Homeland: Jizhou, Mythical China Occupation: warlord and strategist Wen Zhong is a character in the Chinese classical mythological novel 'The Investiture of the Gods.' He wields a dragon whip and rides a black Qilin. As the Grand Preceptor, he fought tirelessly for the Shang dynasty, earning immense respect from both mortals and gods. In battles against the Zhou dynasty, he defeated Jiang Ziya several times but ultimately met his demise. After Wen Zhong's death, Jiang Ziya bestowed upon him the title of Thunder God. Here is the decree from Jiang Ziya in the novel: "You, Wen Zhong, once entered the famous mountains and cultivated the Great Dao. Although you attained the fruit of returning to the source, you have not yet realized the ultimate truth of oneness. You are destined not to reach the highest realm of immortals but held the highest rank of a minister, assisting two dynasties with utmost loyalty. Though your fate was sealed by the calamities of the era, your steadfastness and integrity are admirable. Now, I appoint you to oversee the Thunder Division, to summon clouds and bring rain, nurturing all living things, punishing the wicked and rewarding the good. I hereby confer upon you the title of Nine Heavens Responder to the Primordial Thunder God, Universal Transformer, and Supreme Sovereign. You shall lead the 24 Thunder Division Heavenly Lords, who assist in cloud summoning and rainmaking, and enforce the law. Fulfill your duties diligently." |
