History[]

The wasen is a traditional Japanese wooden plank ship. Japanese daimyล often used these ships for military purposes: whether sailing around the Japanese archipelago or attacking neighboring countries, they would transport samurai warriors to neighboring countries to try and conquer them. For example, in the 16th century, Toyotomi Hideyoshi invaded Korea with 9,000 ships, and in 1609 CE, Shimazu Tadatsune invaded the Ryลซkyลซ Islands with 2,500 samurai. Although their neighbors โ such as the Chinese and the Koreans โ historically had stronger navies, Japanese soldiers were exceptionally skilled in close combat, particularly during shipboard engagements.
