The warship fires a burst of three cannons, with each shot having a 0.375-tile radius Area of Effect, with damage scaling down to 40% and 20% of its maximum towards the edge. It can only fire from one side at a time, with each side sharing the same attack cooldown, and can fire while moving.
The warship is a very expensive military ship available only in the Imperial Age. It is mainly used as an anti-building specialist due to its high siege attack and long range. In an anti-ship role, it can beat Arrow Ships due to its sheer stats, gets countered by Incendiary Ships, and has a conditional matchup with fully-upgraded Springald Ships (cost-effectively). In a 2 Springald Ships-vs-1 warship fight (700 resources vs 600), Springald Ships will theoretically win in a head-on fight if they have Swivel Cannon and Springald Crews researched, but lose otherwise, allowing the player who reaches the Imperial Age first to potentially gain an advantage by creating warships to counter Castle Age Springald Ships. Even against fully-upgraded Springald Ships, the much higher range of the warship can allow it to still win if it can get off several shots first. The Rus and Malians can flip this matchup more easily by researching Mounted Guns for increased Springald Ship damage and range. Generally, Springald Ships will still counter Archer ships more cost-effectively, but warships are more all-purpose and population efficient and may be preferable in the late-game.
Originally, several statists differed for each flavor of warship (shown below). With the Anniversary Update, all warships were standardized to have the same stats.
In addition to the separate stats, originally, all warships took up 6 population, had a +50 attack bonus vs buildings, and had a formation spacing of 4.5 tiles. They also had independent cooldowns for the projectiles fired from each side and dealt ranged damage. With the Anniversary update, they now take up 5 population, have a +70 attack bonus vs buildings, have a formation spacing of 3 tiles, deal siege damage, and share the same cooldown for both sides.
Trivia[]
Based on available dialogue lines, the Rus likely had access to the warship at some point in development. This may have been removed as a reference to the fact that the Russian empire did not develop large ships of the Western European variety until the late 1600s.
