—Age of Empires IV description |
The Warrior Monk is a unique religious cavalry unit of the Rus in Age of Empires IV. It is a mounted religions unit that, unlike others, can attack other units. It can also pick up Relics, convert enemy units, capture Sacred Sites and heal friendly units like any other religious unit. While carrying a Relic, their movement speed is reduced by 25%, which is still faster than that of a Monk-counterpart without Relic.
The Mongols can also potentially obtain access to the Warrior Monk through their Khaganate Palace landmark.
Ability[]
- Heal (passive/active): Heals friendly units at 7 hit points per second up to full health from a distance of one tile. This can be targeted by right-clicking on a unit, or the nearest unit within a 5 tile radius will automatically be healed. Targets in combat are healed 50% slower.
- Toggle Automatic Healing (toggle): Toggle automatic healing on or off.
- Drop Relic: Drop a held Relic at a particular location. This can only be used to drop-off a Relic on the map, not in a building such as a Monastery, which must be right clicked while holding the Relic.
- Conversion (active): While carrying a Relic, attempts to convert all units within a 4.75 tile radius to its side. Any enemy units remaining within the radius at the end of a 6 second countdown are converted. Siege engines, hero units, and other religious units are not affected. Has a 120 second cooldown.
- Saint's Blessing (passive): Whenever the Warrior Monk attacks a unit, all other units (except other Warrior Monks) within a 2-tile radius gain +2 attack and +1 melee and ranged armor for 10 seconds. The duration can be increased by +10 seconds with the Monastery technology Divine Light. The range can be increased by +5 tiles and the attack bonus by +1 with the Abbey of the Trinity technology Fervor. This ability has no cooldown. As soon as the ability duration expires, it can immediately be activated again.
Tactics[]
The Warrior Monk fulfills different roles than other religious units: they thrive in fights. Being mounted, it is fast and also benefits from cavalry technologies, but correspondingly also takes extra bonus damage from anti-cavalry attacks. Their ability - Saint's Blessing buffs all units in range, whether infantry or cavalry. Whenever the Warrior Monk attacks, it gives an extra +2 attack and +1 armor to nearby units. This buff cannot be stacked with another Warrior Monk, and refreshes its duration for each attack. This makes Rus Knights, accompanied by a Warrior Monk, quite deadly in big numbers. In theory, Warrior Monks can also be included in an infantry mass, but those infantry cannot camouflage the Monks. With 0 pierce and melee armor, they're just a punching bag for enemy archers.
As a religious unit, Warrior Monks fill same basic functionality when it comes to capturing Sacred Sites, recovering Relics, and healing. Being a mounted unit, they are especially fast and have a much easier time recovering Relics than standard Monks. With their combat abilities, they can even kill enemy Monks that might be vying for Relics. In combat, while they can heal units, they will always prioritize fighting if enemies are present, so cannot generally be relied on for mid-combat health recovery.
The Abbey of the Trinity landmark reduces the cost of Warrior Monks by 50% and houses some unique technologies that increase their buff, so consider building this landmark to further strengthen the Warrior Monk.
