History[]

The term "dhow" refers to many subclasses of vessels rigged with lateen sails used by the cultures inhabiting the coasts of the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. Lateen rigged ships, with their ability to easily tack and maneuver, were perfect for plying the waterways of this region and adapting to the changing currents and winds. Although originally used primarily by merchants and explorers, dhows also found a niche as versatile and dangerous warships.
