Villagers can hunt wild animals for Food. Walruses will attack hunters.
—In-game description

This animal can be hunted, but fights back.
—In-game description

The Walrus is a huntable animal in Age of Mythology, found near water in Norse lands, particularly in Midgard, where it is found in sizable herds.

If attacked, it will fight back, so bring a few workers before attempting to hunt it. The walrus can be a dangerous prey, but gives a good amount of food.

History[]

Scientific name -- Odobenus rosmarus
Size -- 10 feet long, up to 3000 lbs.
Diet -- clams, worms, snails, cephalopods

Walruses are large marine mammals. Although they spend most of their time diving up to 250 feet deep in search of food, humans typically encounter walruses only when the great mammals are resting or caring for young on beaches and ice floes, often in large numbers. Walruses live only in Arctic waters, where they are kept warm by a layer of blubber up to six inches thick. Both males and females have long tusks, but these are apparently not used to gather food. Males use their tusks in battles for dominance. Both sexes also use them to pull themselves out of the water, and perhaps to anchor their bulk when resting on ice. Walrus have unusual pockets in their esophagus that they can fill with air in order to remain afloat when sleeping.

The genus name in Greek means "he who walks with his teeth".

Trivia[]

  • Apart from Sea Lions (an animal used as a prop in a Treasure, in Age of Empires III), the Walrus is the only pinniped in the series.
    • However, Crabeater Seals were considered for the third game (as seen in the Scenario Editor), possibly appearing in Patagonia and/or Araucania. For unknown reasons, they lack a model and were not added in-game.
  • Unlike other wild animals which are able to attack, the Walrus can't be sided to a player with the unit tool in the Scenario Editor. If a Walrus is spawned, it always will be sided with Gaia (Mother Nature), even if it is supposed to spawn for another player.
    • This problem can be fixed in lot of ways: using editor triggers (for example, it must be converted to a player), converting it with a Priest while playing with Set as main god, or using the cheat "SET ASCENDANT".
