Volcanic Island is a hybrid random map in Age of Empires IV. The map features a large island with many small bays and a large, elevated central forest.
Features[]
Like Continental, Volcanic Island features a singular large island. However, the island is larger and punctuated with bays and peninsulas that can extend to the map edge, resulting in the water surrounding the map often being non-contiguous and limiting naval maneuverability. The bays can sometimes connect and form small islands which are connected to the main island through shallow water. The land on the main island is mostly completely open, rising in elevation from the shore to the center where it culminates in a large forest and somtimes a couple of small cliff features. Players spawn in a circle around this forest and can spawn in relatively close proximity to opponents in team games, especially 4 vs 4. The two Sacred Sites on the map will spawn in between teams on opposite shores of the island. The Trade Posts spawn along the shore behind the players, roughly as the corners of a square in team games where there are four. Relics spawn all around the shores of the island.
Resources[]
Although the number of Fish on Volcanic Island is smaller than on some other maps, it can still support a reasonable naval economy. Each bay typically contains one to three Deep Water Fish and one to two Shore Fish, enough for several Fishing Boats. It can often be possible to find two or more bays connected together, reducing the need to build additional Docks. On land, all of the wood is concentrated into the central forest, leaving the rest of the available space for plentiful additional resources. The second Small Gold Mine players normally start out with slightly farther out from their Capital Town Center is replaced with a Large Gold Mine, and the rest of the small golds are spread fairly uniformly around the island. Stone Outcroppings, both large and small, will mostly spawn behind teams in slightly greater number than usual. All food sources on land are standard, with the Boars most often clumped together in the small regions between teams around the Sacred Sites.
