Chemistry Edit

Sorry, you're right! I misread the Chemistry intro paragraph in a hurry (it specifies something about gunpowder units, but the technology itself is still available). Techhead7890 Talk Contribs 20:18, November 19, 2019 (UTC)

No worries! I almost misread the intro myself, but I seemed to remember researching Chemistry in the Montezuma campaign, so I read it again.Narve (talk) 20:22, November 19, 2019 (UTC)

---and the Age of Empires III skirmishes (not a fan of the campaigns in that game).

My reaction:

WHHAAATTTT!!!! I like the normal campaigns, but not the Asien and Indian ones. I like the skirmishes too. But how do you bear the age of empires II campaign? They always speak in a super difficult to hear accent! And Age of empires is ok, I guess. But the very first campaign level is such a waste of time! Build settlers? Really? And really, I may sound like a 5-year-old cry baby, but do you know when they release number four?

So far, all they've said is that it'll be released in 2020 - and even that's not certain.Narve (talk) 19:17, November 20, 2019 (UTC)

Changelog Edit

Ok i will take that inconsideration.--Papermaniac (talk) 19:40, November 20, 2019 (UTC)

Hey Narve, do you use Discord and have a name where I could contact you there about something?

Golden Fleece Edit

In case of stress with Nick3069, please let him know that the golden fleece is a hero. Because I know the game well with respect to all heroes. Because this unit will not appear in Hero Search, like the younger version of Kastor, but the fleece is still a hero. You can find it out under the Trigger option by setting the animal to be killed. If you do that, you see that the corpse is not wasted and you can click it. You also see the yellow bar, which fills up, like some other heroes. When the bar is full, he gets up again, so he is considered a hero. Basically, all the missing heroes I've added count as heroes. Some of them are being revived, some not like Circe. For this they are listed in the hero search. All in all, Tale of the Dragon has been bringing 30 heroes. ----Kerberos01

User:Nick3069 is an experienced and valued contributor - I would be surprised if this devolved into edit warring, name calling, or any other sort of unpleasantness, so I don't think you have anything to worry about. You two can discuss the difference of opinion in the article's comments (either Hero (Age of Mythology) or Golden Fleece), or on each other talk pages (I would recommend the former).Narve (talk) 23:08, November 26, 2019 (UTC)

Suggestion: New section called "Definitive Edition" or "In Definitive Edition" to campaign scenario articles Edit

As of now, the changes in civs and other stuff have either been included directly into the original text or in the Trivia section. This makes reading about them confusing.

I think it's best to list all (relevant) changes in a separate section after the historical comparison including player and color changes, narration changes (e.g. Kushluk is now identified as a Naiman), new units, etc. And if the scenario has been redone, to just write a bullet in the section saying "In DE, this scenario has been replaced by [[New Title Link]]".Eljuma (talk) 16:00, November 28, 2019 (UTC)

We should probably have a discussion about handling DE changes to campaigns, but that is something that belongs in a blog post where everyone participates, rather than one user's talk page. Your suggestion is a good one, though.Narve (talk) 20:13, November 28, 2019 (UTC)

About Spahi and Mahout Lancer Edit

How is Mahout superior to Spahi? Spahi can obtain Guard and Imperial status. Even without any upgrades, Spahi beats Mahout Lancer.

Have you tried to fight them one on one? Regardless of who gets first hit, the Mahout Lancer wins (though not by much). Test it for yourself if you don't believe me.
And I don't get why you mention the fact that the Spahi can reach Guard and Imperial status - so can the Mahout Lancer (well, Honored and Exalted, but that's just a difference in terminology).
But it might be a good idea to write "tied for strongest melee cavalry" on both articles or something - the difference is too small to matter.Narve (talk) 19:12, December 13, 2019 (UTC)

But it might be a good idea to write "tied for strongest melee cavalry"

So, am I allowed to do that?

I've made the change now.Narve (talk) 09:34, December 14, 2019 (UTC)

Mobile Main PageEdit

There seems to be a lot of broken images on the Mobile Main Page. Do you think you could look it over and fix it and update it as necessary?
◄► Tephra ◄► @fandom 20:21, December 13, 2019 (UTC)

I'll take a look.Narve (talk) 09:34, December 14, 2019 (UTC)
Great. When you've finished, could you drop a note on my talk page (or PM me on Discord) so I get notified? I was handed a ticket to inform you about this, and I'll need to mark it as resolved.

Mobile skin issuesEdit

Well, I've confirmed Template:Civilization tabs is at fault, as removing it fixes the problem. However, that raises the question of why it isn't always a problem. I have no idea. I will look at it some more, but I think I may have to call in reinforcements for this one. Unfortunately, most everyone is off until January 2nd.
◄► Tephra ◄► @fandom 18:43, December 26, 2019 (UTC)

Well, I fixed it by adding a close to the open table left by the template, but again, that doesn't really explain why the Chinese article functions as it also doesn't have a close to the table. Perhaps having a solution without an answer is good enough?

Topic cardEdit

Hey Narve, we need an image to use as a topic card for this wiki on the Fandom app. It needs to be an image of a person or object that represents the wiki and fits within a 672x951px area. Would you have any suggestions?
◄► Tephra ◄► @fandom 11:24, January 4, 2020 (UTC)

My first suggestion would be an image of the Knight, since AoE2 is the most popular game on the wiki, and the Knight is an iconic unit from that game. However, no one has uploaded a high-quality image of the Definitive Edition Knight yet, and the existing images are too low-quality to use. I've asked a user that uploads high-quality images if he could upload it.Narve (talk) 12:23, January 4, 2020 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I think the Cataphract is too small and the picture shouldn't be cut off on the sides. I tried Googling some more images, and I think finding one large enough may prove quite difficult. I did manage to find an Age of Empires wallpaper with some horsemen that might work, though it would certainly require some editing down. I am also not sure how well it would represent the wiki.

Are there any pages that need images or animations to better explain the page? I'm a good image editor so I can do pretty much anything. -- XZippy (talk) 23:53, January 7, 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the offer! I'm not aware of any articles that need animations right now (though your addition to the Rate of Fire article was great), but we have a category for articles that need images. If you want, you could find some good images for those articles..Narve (talk) 17:23, January 8, 2020 (UTC)

Currently unable to comment on pagesEdit

I have no idea why, but I can't comment on pages. It appears to be just me, because I get notifications for new comments. Can you help? UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 19:36, February 5, 2020 (UTC)

That happens occasionally; try logging out and logging in again.Narve (talk) 17:00, February 6, 2020 (UTC)

Profile imagesEdit

Are we allowed to upload images for our profile pictures? -- XZippy (talk) 15:27, March 25, 2020 (UTC)

I don't think that's necessary, because you can simply locally upload an image to use for the profile picture without having to upload it to the wiki. As long as it's appropriate, any picture is fine. UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 15:30, March 25, 2020 (UTC)
There's an untrainable "ninja" unit in AoE2, can I make a page for that? -- XZippy (talk) 21:11, March 25, 2020 (UTC)
Yes, we do have pages for some untrainable units (like the Amazon Archer).Narve (talk) 16:27, March 26, 2020 (UTC)
The general pages for the unit types that aren't directly pointed at one specific game (but meant to encompass all games, like this one)... Could I use the generic images I added for THOSE pages? -- XZippy (talk) 23:36, March 27, 2020 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean like this image? No, I don't think non-game images belong in articles. It would be better to use a unit image from one of the games (any of the games - for example, the Trebuchet is suitably iconic, if anyone could upload the DE icon to the wiki).Narve (talk) 08:12, March 28, 2020 (UTC)
The generic images I was using was from the "art book" of the games. I don't know if that still counts? -- XZippy (talk) 12:31, March 28, 2020 (UTC)
I see. If you note in the image description where the image comes from, that sounds fine, but I still think the article's main image should be an in-game unit (art book images are more suitable for galleries).Narve (talk) 16:34, March 28, 2020 (UTC)
As you can see, I've uploaded all the new HD definitive edition icons. Some icons have no pages associated with them, they just appear in some small lists. Can I completely replace them with the HD versions -- XZippy (talk) 00:50, March 30, 2020 (UTC)

IAmNotWorthYourTime Edit

Keeps undoing my reverts. Claims siege infantry doesn't exist as a tag. Obviously has never trained grens, or arsonists. TheRealMictlantecuhtli (talk) 00:35, March 26, 2020 (UTC)

I can't find siege infantry as a tag in my game, either. Are you thinking of SiegeTrooper?Narve (talk) 16:27, March 26, 2020 (UTC)

Scripting Gaia units in AoE3 Edit

Hey Narve, I found out, that you are the master of AoE series, so when I was looking for someone's help, I knew where to find. Anyway, my problem is: In AoE3, is there in the scenario editor any scripting to be found? And if so, how big are its possibilities? What I wanna do, is to script some Gaia units (e.g. few musketeers somewhere) to be hostile towards any player and other units (e.g. different musketeers elsewhere) to convert to the first player it encounters (as herdable animals do). I found some info on the 'Gaia' site about AutoConvert action in the prototype files, but I haven't been able to find them. Is it possible and if so, are there any limitations?

March 26, 2020 (UTC)

Sadly, I know nothing about creating scenarios AoE3, so you'll have to ask someone else.Narve (talk) 17:01, March 27, 2020 (UTC)

List of All Unit ImagesEdit

So uh... I have absolutely fantastic news. I made some videos that showcase every single unit image in the game. Including the heroes. You can get those videos here:

The only problem is you still have to match the images with the cryptic numbered filenames in the game directory. But these videos should make the process like 60% easier. If you thought this wiki had a lot of good images now... -- XZippy (talk) 00:14, April 1, 2020 (UTC)

Remember, the directory of these files - at least for Steam, is the following:

-- XZippy (talk) 00:29, April 1, 2020 (UTC)

That's interesting, but I'm afraid the video won't be much use - it moves too quickly to make it easy to identify icons, and even if it didn't, it's too much work to try to hunt down the specific unit in the video. It's easier for me to just open the game and check for myself.Narve (talk) 09:18, April 1, 2020 (UTC)
You can use quicktime player to move through the video with ease. You still have to dig through the numbered files in the game dir anyway, and chances are, you're probably not gonna know EVERY single image just by looking at it. And I'll take care of the whole icon/category thing for everything I uploaded. -- XZippy (talk) 16:49, April 1, 2020 (UTC)

Promoting XZippyEdit

Given XZippy's amazing edits in the past few weeks (over 400 in just a few days!), I think that he should be promoted to Moderator ASAP. He definitely deserves it, and I already made the nomination on Requests for permissions. UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 03:11, April 2, 2020 (UTC)

This is absolutely not a complaint. I'm just curious. I noticed that all the other mods have "content moderator" and I don't. Is that normal? I only ask because I still don't understand the whole protocol for promotions. -- XZippy (talk) 03:13, April 7, 2020 (UTC)
I hit the checkbox for content moderator. That's quite odd... Let me see if I can fix it. UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 03:19, April 7, 2020 (UTC)
I was wrong about thinking I hit the content moderator box. I cannot change that for some reason. Sorry! UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 03:21, April 7, 2020 (UTC)
I've handled it now.Narve (talk) 10:00, April 7, 2020 (UTC)

Question about proper admin behaviorEdit

On the Vietnamese page, one of the commenters brought up a political topic in a very controversial and disrespectful way. I warned him gently not to talk about politics on this wiki, but he mouthed off on me. I acted considerably tougher after this and threatened to block him from the wiki for a time if he kept bringing up controversial topics and speaking in a disrespectful tone to admins. I wanted to know if I was out of line, even though I started out gentle. Thanks! UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 16:19, April 3, 2020 (UTC)

You were quite right to do what you did. This is not a discussion forum for political topics, and I would appreciate it if some people stopped treating it like one. You handled the situation very well.Narve (talk) 17:42, April 3, 2020 (UTC)

A small requestEdit

Since I was the one who nominated XZippy for promotion and first recognized his potential, I think when he is promoted, it would mean a lot to him if I was the one to promote him and inform him of the promotion. If there's any way for you to inform the other admins of my desire to personally promote him, I would appreciate it. UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 18:27, April 3, 2020 (UTC)

Only bureaucrats can promote users, so only MasterBroccoli and I can handle that task. However, feel free to tell him the results of the poll when it is done.Narve (talk) 17:47, April 4, 2020 (UTC)
Really? Because I seem to have that option. It's listed under sysop privileges. UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 18:02, April 4, 2020 (UTC)

You're right, my memory failed me. Feel free to promote him when the poll is closed (assuming we don't have a sudden surge of "No" votes).Narve (talk) 18:06, April 4, 2020 (UTC)

How will I know when the poll is over? UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 18:17, April 4, 2020 (UTC)

Like the page states, "All requests can last for at least a week". One week after opening is standard, assuming there have been at least a few responses (which there has).Narve (talk) 20:11, April 4, 2020 (UTC)
All right, so since I nominated him on the 31st, and we know this from MasterBroccoli's talk page, even though I signed it on the 2nd due to forgetting to do so, I will promote XZippy on the 7th. UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 20:54, April 4, 2020 (UTC)

Changing XZippy's link colorEdit

I have promoted XZippy, since it has been about a week since I nominated him, and updated all the templates. However, do you think you could change his link color to match all the moderators? That's a little too complex for me. UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 18:35, April 5, 2020 (UTC)

I've handled it now.Narve (talk) 21:14, April 6, 2020 (UTC)

Absence Edit

Hi! I just wanted to let you know that I will not be able to contribute here for the foreseeable future (I'm expecting to be away at least a few months). I will let you know when the situation allows more of my time to be spent for the wiki. MasterBroccoli (talk) 18:22, April 12, 2020 (UTC)

I saw the note on your user page, and wrote my response before I saw the above post. No worries, take all the time you need.Narve (talk) 18:24, April 12, 2020 (UTC)

Upgrade Icons Edit

I think I brought this up before but I can't remember. Some upgrades don't have their own pages, should I replace the old upgrade images with the DE ones? -- XZippy (talk) 22:49, April 16, 2020 (UTC)

Also if there's anything that absolutely needs a .GIF image, please tell me. -- XZippy (talk) 02:32, April 17, 2020 (UTC)
If it's an image that's used on lots of pages, it would be better handled with a bot - if it's only used on one or two pages, it would be great if you replace them manually. I don't know if you know this, but you can see how many times a file is used by using "what links here" - for example, File:CivIcon-Teutons.png and Special:WhatLinksHere/File:CivIcon-Teutons.png.

AoE2 Firing Rates Edit

There seems to be an extra 0.03 added to a lot of aoe2 units' firing rates. I asked a lot of people on the forums and they said it's a mistake on the wiki's end. That makes sense, because I when check the units' stats through the Advanced Genie Editor (whereas the ROF value is known as "reload time"), the fire rates come out different than what's on this wiki.

Should we uh... change that? -- XZippy (talk) 15:17, April 24, 2020 (UTC)

Yes. I don't know where it comes from, but if anyone wants to reinstate it, they will have to justify it first. We should change it.Narve (talk) 15:20, April 24, 2020 (UTC)
On second thought, this is one of those things that is more easily handled by a bot. I'll take care of it.Narve (talk) 15:26, April 24, 2020 (UTC)

Choice of sprites Edit

I just found out how to open and animate the sprites from the Definitive Edition of the games. The only issue is, because those edges are so smooth and anti-aliased, they wouldn't translate very well to GIF format. Would you rather have the older crisp sprites from the original games? Or stills from the DE version of the games? There's a third option, I could make APNG's of the DE sprites, but not all browsers support that. -- XZippy (talk) 12:59, April 30, 2020 (UTC)

Gifs from the original game sounds like the best solution to me.Narve (talk) 21:12, April 30, 2020 (UTC)
You know how the generic infantry/cavalry/archer/etc. pages for aoe2 have large icon pictures but with no black background? Should those stay or should DE-res sprites take those places? -- XZippy (talk) 22:21, May 1, 2020 (UTC)
You are suggesting replacing the icons with in-game units? I'm not sure - I think I prefer the icons. But you could for example add a DE version of this image to the Knight line articles - that would make it easier to make up my mind. I hope that's OK.Narve (talk) 06:34, May 2, 2020 (UTC)
You might be misunderstanding this. I'm talking about ONLY the transparent background large icons at the top-right of those general pages. No other icons. And yes I'll update the images like the one you linked. Too easy. -- XZippy (talk) 22:10, May 2, 2020 (UTC)

No, I understood what you meant (top images on articles like Cavalry units (Age of Empires II)). I still think an icon might be better. Though we should probably replace the siege weapons image - generally, the image should be an iconic version, and the Organ Gun is not what most fans think of (I only used it because it was the only uploaded DE siege weapon icon at the time). Could you replace it with the Trebuchet icon or a ram icon or something like that?Narve (talk) 06:24, May 3, 2020 (UTC)

I suggest the Mangonel. I think when most people hear "siege weapon," they think of Mangonels and Onagers, since they're the most popular and most used. UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 16:29, May 3, 2020 (UTC)

Wiki StyleEdit

Hi Narve, thanks for making the styling on my last few edits consistent with the rest of the wiki. Is there anywhere to look for a guide on style for this wiki (i.e., always italicize the game names)? Rufusbuzzcut (talk) 21:55, May 4, 2020 (UTC)

Lineup ImagesEdit

For example, that image of a knight, cavalier and paladin in a row that I updated with better sprites. Can I do that for all lineup images by just replacing them? Or do I leave the original and add the new one next to it? -- XZippy (talk) 19:20, May 11, 2020 (UTC)

It would be better to leave the original and add the new one next to it, for comparison.Narve (talk) 20:22, May 11, 2020 (UTC)

Wonder Edit

You alright if I replace all the wonder images on the AoE2 civilization page with transparent png's of the DE wonders? -- XZippy (talk) 00:12, May 18, 2020 (UTC)

I personally would prefer an in-game screenshot, as it's going to be higher quality, but let's see what Narve thinks. UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 00:15, May 18, 2020 (UTC)

I prefer the images with surroundings - the empty space can easily feel soulless. But that's more a discussion for a blog post or the comments section (and I would recommend having side-by-side comparisons to make the discussion easier).Narve (talk) 16:34, May 18, 2020 (UTC)

What to do about HoangEdit

Hello, I'm not sure what to do about DauHoangNguyen1999. He left a comment on the Tatars page essentially implying that people who objected to generic African units having their skin color changed were racist. I rebuked him, saying that such political statements did not belong on this wiki. This is his second offense. What should I do about him? UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 01:36, May 18, 2020 (UTC)

He's had a few more offenses; promoted piracy and some other offensive comments (see his deleted contributions, particularly the most recent one). Either we give him a final warning (on his talk page), or we give him a short block. What's your suggestion?Narve (talk) 16:34, May 18, 2020 (UTC)
I say give him a short block. He needs to learn his lesson, and especially needs to learn that just because he's a well-known competitive player (which he is) that he's not immune to the rules. I would personally like to decide the duration. UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 16:53, May 18, 2020 (UTC)
Go ahead, then.Narve (talk) 16:54, May 18, 2020 (UTC)
Done. The block is for 1 week. Hopefully that's enough time to allow him to reflect on his actions. UnofficialGameExpert78 (talk) 17:05, May 18, 2020 (UTC)

Persecution of Native Persians religions Edit

Hi, Narve. Read that what the Muslims did to the Native religions at Persia, after conquering it - 651 AD.

And that is the Result of the Perscecution...

Now 99,4 % of the people who live at Iran are Muslims, Islamic.

It is nearly 100 %.

The history section is a direct quote from the website of Forgotten Empires (the game's developers). If you want it changed, take it up with them. We're just a wiki.Narve (talk) 16:34, May 18, 2020 (UTC)
