Hi Narve, so i noticed the recent changes on this page, the reason i added the br is because it didnt show any spacing on my view here

Dracula wiki page.png

You're right, I didn't pay close enough attention. My mistake I've undone my edits.Narve (talk) 19:36, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
the <tabber> seems to be bugged that it doesnt automatically recognize new line break without explicit <br/>? like the intro section in the dracula campaign, they become big wall of text without any spacing. --Yongky6749 (talk) 10:34, 17 March 2021 (UTC)
You're right, that is a problem.Narve (talk) 10:40, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

Rename file[edit source]

Hi! Could you rename this file to "The Seven Years' War scenario start"?

Minimap stuck (cant switch) when using tabber[edit source]

Hi, Narve, so recently I added Honfoglalas minimap for DE version however it will not show the switching option, like the one I used for Bukhara

you can see the Honfoglalas one doesnt have clickable "Definitive" and "Original" like in Bukhara

It seems the problem is with the accent mark in "Honfoglalás". I moved the image to Honfoglalas, and it worked.Narve (talk) 18:54, 26 March 2021 (UTC)
Thanks! --Yongky6749 (talk) 12:08, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

Adding unique unit to building availability grid[edit source]

Hi, Narve, what do you think about adding Xolotl Warrior and Flemish Militia to https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Stable_(Age_of_Empires_II)#Trainable_units_and_technologies and https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Town_Center_(Age_of_Empires_II)#Trainable_units_and_technologies?

Is it appropriate?

I referenced it from this page https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Dock_(Age_of_Empires_II)#Trainable_units_and_technologies and https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Archery_Range_(Age_of_Empires_II)#Availability_grid --Yongky6749 (talk) 07:10, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

Adding it to "Trainable units and technologies" seems like a good idea. Adding it to the availability grid seems like a bad idea. Also, please sign your posts.Narve (talk) 20:22, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
Hm didnt mean to copy the availability grid link lol, and alright I will add it to trainable units section, thanks Narve --Yongky6749 (talk) 07:10, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

2icons using DE image[edit source]

Hi Narve, is there any thought/plan to make 2icons template using DE version of the icons? --Yongky6749 (talk) 07:30, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

Yes, we should probably edit the 2icons template to use the new icons, but no one has taken the time to do it.Narve (talk) 18:54, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
Is it okay if I changed some of it to DE version? And to do it, just take the DE image from a particular page for the units? --Yongky6749 (talk) 04:51, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
Sure, go ahead.Narve (talk) 06:34, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
So I was editing the 2icons when i noticed this on Saracens section https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Template:AoEII_Icons#Saracens. It was using "Mamalik" as its plural form, which is technically correct referring to the wiki page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mamluk. However, i feel like changing it to "Mamelukes" is better, since technically not many will know about the plural form of it, and on the wikipedia page for the Mamluk, it was written as "Mamluks" and not "Mamalik" when on its plural form. Thoughts? --Yongky6749 (talk) 11:25, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
Yes, the game uses "Mamelukes" as plural, so the wiki does the same.Narve (talk) 11:08, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Naming of Tutorial Campaign/Learning Campaign campaign in scenarios[edit source]

Hi Narve, I was wondering what your opinion is on the choice between mentioning the DE title Tutorial Campaign: Ascent of Egypt or the original AoE title Ascent of Egypt Learning Campaign in their corresponding scenarios such. Before, the original title was used, but typically the DE title has priority so I changed it to that (this also avoids a redirect). Of course, it is also an option to mention both titles, but considering how similar their titles are, I think that doing that would hurt the readability without any benefit. BoazMoerman (talk) 21:50, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

That seems to be the correct call. Per consensus on other pages, we use the most recent name (Heavy Camel Rider instead of Heavy Camel, Zealotry instead of Jihad, etc.) and in most cases, there's no reason to have both titles on the same page (unless it's the article itself, of course - both names go in the Tutorial Campaign: Ascent of Egypt article).Narve (talk) 07:58, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

Abbreviations of civilizations[edit source]

Hi! I used the abbreviations HA for Haudenosaunee, LA for Lakota and AZ for Aztecs in the Villager (Age of Empires III) article. In your opinion, are the abbreviations correct and in line with quality standards?

That seems fine. Please sign your posts.Narve (talk) 06:24, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

For sure, thank you! And what about the abbreviation for the Incas, which one do you suggest? Ricky Robaina (talk) 01:54, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Maybe just use "Inca"? IN could also mean the Indians, and INC is almost as long as INCA.Narve (talk) 11:08, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Using only "Inca" looks better. Thank you for your opinion! RkyRC (talk) 00:42, 6 April 2021 (UTC)

2icons broken on new fandom mobile[edit source]

Hi Narve, looks like the new looks for fandom mobile broke the 2icons? it is no longer showing the name of the units, some page example: https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Armor_class:_Archer

https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/The_Cleansing_of_the_Loire --Yongky6749 (talk) 15:41, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

The problem seems to be redirects. 2icons is not a template, it is a redirect to the template "AoEII Icons". So we can either:
  1. Contact fandom staff to see if they can fix it.
  2. Use a bot to change all 2icons links to "AoEII Icons" links.
  3. Rename the "AoEII Icons" template to 2icons.
My vote is for #2. Also, please sign your posts.Narve (talk) 15:16, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
Well honestly, if it not a hassle i still prefer using 2icons if possible (#1) because its much easier to type lol, but im ok with whatever method is taken --Yongky6749 (talk) 15:41, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

Age of Empires IV article[edit source]

Hi Narve,

I'm going to apply edit protections to the article since we're get closer to launch and attention on it grows further. I'm pretty confident it'll be a frequent target of vandalism, especially for users with dynamic IP addresses. If they've got something useful to add given how much is unconfirmed and yet to be revealed, they'll opt for registration.

Regards, DunBanner talk page 07:05, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Good idea.Narve (talk) 13:26, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Names of Home City Cards in italic[edit source]

Helo! There are articles that mention the names of Home City Cards in italics (Coyote Runner and Village) and others that mention in parentheses (Haudenosaunee War Chief and Fort). Which would be the most appropriate and within the quality standards? RkyRC (talk) 23:26, 25 April 2021 (UTC)

Only game titles should be in italics, not Home City cards.Narve (talk) 15:28, 26 April 2021 (UTC)

Thanks! RkyRC (talk) 03:38, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

New User[edit source]

Hi Narve, I'm a brand new user. I was hoping to add a page for both Morochucos and Cowboys and was wondering if there's an easy way to copy another similar page such as Vaquero? Any help would be appreciated. Cerrobend (talk) 04:26, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

The easiest way is to into preferences (click your icon in the upper right, click "My Preferences"), go to Editing and choose "Source editor" as preferred editor if you haven't done so already. This will make editing much faster and easier. Then go to the Vaquero article, click Edit, CTRL+A to select all text, and CTRL+C to copy. Open a page for the Cowboys, and click CTRL+V to paste. Then go through the article correcting all the information that is different between the two units (is the cost the same? The ROF? Upgrades? Home City Cards? Remember to fix the name of the unit and the revolutionary nation it's available from). If there's any information you're unsure about, leave it blank - it's better to have no information than false information. Also, leave an edit summary like "copied from the Vaquero article", so that the original editors get credit for their work.Narve (talk) 10:06, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

Thanks! Cerrobend (talk) 10:30, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

What’s wrong with linking to redirects?[edit source]

Why do we have to write Age of Kings instead of just Age of Kings? Is it just because the latter method is less common? —(((Rottweiler))) (Woof? Ruff!) 22:17, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

Linking directly to the page is usually seen as cleaner - unless we link to a subsection of an article that may be split into a separate article later (for example, the herdable animals article was previously a subsection of the animals article, so we linked to the redirect instead of the subsection). If we WERE going to use redirects, it wouldn't be "Age of Kings", but "The Age of Kings" (which is the correct title). You've previously linked to Definitive Edition, which is doubly wrong - it's not a redirect to Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, but a disambiguation page containing links to all Definitive Editions. Writing the full title avoids mistakes like that.Narve (talk) 19:27, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
Hmm, all right. I have to confess that I don’t remember linking to that disambiguation page, and that I don’t think that this policy is the better one, but I’m not going to keep breaking it either. In any case, it would be nice if somebody specified this policy in the local manual of style. —(((Rottweiler))) (Woof? Ruff!) 01:58, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
I've checked now - you never linked to the disambig page, my memory was wrong, and I should have checked before I wrote it. Sorry about that. We should probably expand the Manual of Style, yeah.Narve (talk) 18:40, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

Are you theViper? Just confirming.[edit source]

Hello sir! I didn't know that pro players contribute to the wiki. I guess you write the strategy for civs and scenarios.

No, I'm not TheViper.Narve (talk) 16:26, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

Card templates[edit source]

thinking about AoE III cards... there's some way to make them as a template, that instead of updating every unit that gets affected by a card, you could change and update all the pages? Av93 (talk) 10:43, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

I like the concept. Sort of like how Template:AoE Icons and Template:AoEII Icons are used as shortcuts to icons, we can have a template with shortcuts to Home City cards (so you'd type something like {{card|Admirality}} to get the Admiralty card, etc. It sounds like a lot of work, as someone will have to create and populate the template, but it's a great idea.Narve (talk) 18:40, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi, Narve, could there be an updated image for these files?

A separate article for all dialogue of a civilization in AoE3[edit source]

Greetings! I finally found time to put up an article that contains all unit dialogues of one civilization. As a test, I did for Swedes in my sandbox. Can you please have a look, maybe you would like to change something. Red Khan (talk) 21:46, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

It looks good. The article needs some sort of intro, of course (something like "The voice lines of the Swedish units in Age of Empires III"). You also use heading 1 (with only one equal-sign). We don't usually use that on the wiki - the highest we use is heading-2. So I have added one equal-sign to every heading in the article. Other than that, great.Narve (talk) 16:10, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
Added an intro and a stub template. If you approve, I'll create an article and add a link to it in the Swedes article. Do you have any suggestions for article's name? My suggestion is "In-game dialogue for Swedes". Red Khan (talk) 17:53, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
Maybe having the "Swede" at the beginning of the title? So either "Swedish in-game dialogue" or "Swedes/Dialogue" (making it a subpage of the article, like Strategy and Tech Tree). The latter would be my preference.Narve (talk) 19:06, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
A subpage? I personally don't think it's that important to make it a separate subpage. I mean technology and tech tree is, but dialogue is just flavor not important for gameplay. What I had in mind is creating a page and adding (as an example) {{Main|Swedes' dialogue lines}} template to the "In-game_dialogue" section of Swedes.
I agree that putting civ's name first in the article's makes more sense and think that putting the noun (Swedes) and not adjective (Swedish) is preferable. So I would suggest "Swedes' dialogue lines", but as a separate article, not subpage. Red Khan (talk) 22:09, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
Yes, "Swedes' dialogue lines" is a better title.Narve (talk) 17:48, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
Created the article - Swedes' dialogue lines. Red Khan (talk) 09:30, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
There is one problem with this name though - some units do speak a language spoken by a certain civ, but can't be build by it. As an example - Great Cannon (campaign only unit) speaks Russian, Napoleon gun (mercenary) speaks French. They both use unique file sets. So putting them in article named "Russians'/French's dialogue lines" will not be appropriate. At the same time separating them from the rest of the units that speak Russian/French is not optimal too. Moreover, there are mercenary units that speak Japanese, but have unique lines, different from those that are spoken by regular Japanese units.
Solution that I propose - create a page named "Dialogue of units speaking Russian" with two section "Russians' units" and "Other units speaking Russian". Also make a redirect page "Russians' dialogue lines" that redirects to the Russians' units" section of the first article. Red Khan (talk) 21:01, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

No, I think that's a bad idea. The Creat Cannon doesn't belong on an article of Russian units, and the Napoleon Gun doesn't belong in the French article. It would be better to create a mercenary / campaign-only article for that dialogue.Narve (talk) 07:28, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

IMHO it is important to acknowledge other units that use the same language. How about a "Trivia" section that will list them? I created one in Swedes'_dialogue_lines#Trivia. Red Khan (talk) 11:18, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
Yes, that's better.Narve (talk) 19:15, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
Do you know when the Explorer says the "Claim" line in-game? I want to check that it's still German for the Swedes.Narve (talk) 16:18, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
I don't play AoE3 myself, just saw it in the game's xml files. But I've read on YouTube comments that this line is used in the King of the Hill game mode. Red Khan (talk) 17:53, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

Ban MikeEmpires[edit source]

He is ranked 59 on this wiki by literally spamming and self promotion. All he is doing is posting links of his video and their description on every page, for which he has other resources too. Most of his content is 'unit X' vs all other units - either regular, unique or scenario editor ones - cost effective vs population effective. Also, please undo all his changes.

Ban him for adding videos? To this date, no one has ever removed one of his videos from an article, or complained about them (you're literally the first one). To be fair, no one has ever complimented them either, so I think most people just ignore them. If you want them gone, start a discussion and try to get consensus for removing them. Also, sign your posts.Narve (talk) 19:51, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

It was okay till he added the links to his videos, but now he has started creating pages after them, bloating the wiki. I have contributed much more quality content, but he ranked better than me because of spamming. User:Sauravt2812/User:Saurav Tripathi. IDK why I have 2 IDs, 11.

MikeEmpires has never created a single article, only uploaded files and added them to the wiki. I repeat: if you want his videos removed, you need to start a discussion and gain consensus for it.Narve (talk) 17:01, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

Confusion on HTML tag line breaks
[edit source]

Howdy, got a small question about the <br> tag. I noticed you change them to <br /> instead of leaving them as is, so I looked up the differences and found this forum answer describing XHTML. What is the reason to do this? Is this wiki strict on how tags are closed? Would you like me to use <br /> instead of <br>? I could not find any mention of this on your talk pages or the Manual of Style miscellaneous section. Sylphoid (talk) 22:41, 3 June 2021 (UTC)

The problem with using <br> tags is that the wiki software will often read this as a beginning tag, and thus color the entire rest of the page in the open-tag color (which makes it harder to edit). This is a problem that comes and goes when they update the Fandom software. Closing the tag fixes the issue. You're right, that should definitely be in the Manual of Style.Narve (talk) 19:24, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

Spacing in the new layout[edit source]

Hi, Narve! With the new Fandom layout, the articles show too much spacing where there should be no spacing at all. As example I attached this screenshot of the fifth Hautevilles scenario article. I opened the source editor and everything is ok there. Joaosantos92 (talk) 20:28, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

That's not good. Hopefully, this will be fixed before the layout is implemented fandom-wide. If not, we'll ask for some help from Fandom to fix it.Narve (talk) 10:18, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

Bots[edit source]

That NarveBot thing you use? Did you make that bot yourself? -- XZippy (talk) 11:07, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

My bot works through AutoWikiBrowser. To use it, you must register a bot account (a regular account with "bot" in its name) and ask Fandom staff to turn it into a bot account. You need permission from the wiki's admins or a bureaucrat to be granted a bot. You have my permission. This page has more information.Narve (talk) 15:31, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
