What happed to this wiki?[edit source]

Hey Narve,

What happened to this wiki: special:wikiactivity has disappeared, all the comments have disappeared, and editing is different. Are these the "new changes" most of wikia will go through or is this just something this wiki chose to do.

Anyway, how will these changes affect using this wiki?

Best regards,

Like the top of the page says, "Attention: We have migrated your community and all of its content onto new wiki software. Find out more in this blog post. Article Comments and/or Message Walls have completed their migration as well." This is not something we asked for, we can't undo it, and it's much slower to make edits this way (takes longer to make changes, takes longer to save, etc.)Narve (talk) 06:15, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

I'm sure Wikia had their reasons to move on from old software, but the universal changes are truly baffling/dreadful. On top of the poor editor performance, the formatting of infoboxes/pages is all over the place, not to mention how bad user pages look. It'll be on them once again to fix this mess and that won't come quick unfortunately. DunBanner talk page 06:42, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

Wonderful, the polls are entirely broken. DunBanner talk page 06:55, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
So, you can't use source mode in comments now, or am I missing something?
AmazingAncientWorld (talk) 03:24, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

This editor is so terrible to use that I'm genuinely not sure whether I'm going to keep editing or just leave Fandom altogether (I think I will stay, but I'm not sure).Narve (talk) 17:09, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

@Narve You shouldn't quit. I remember when I first started editing here you always politely pointed out when I made mistakes and would clarify when I had questions; this is unique in Wikia, as administrators usually don't take the time to help new users and penalize them when they make mistakes. I've seen you mediate problems and strive to promote equity and fairness on this Wiki. You have made and encouraged this Wiki to be a welcoming place and have promoted this philosophy to the other users. It would truly be a shame if you left.

As always...

Best regards,

Thank you for your words. Like I said, I will most likely stay, but this new editor is truly frustrating.Narve (talk) 06:07, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
Which editor did you used to use, and which one are you using now? If you used to use Source, it likely switched you to using Visual Editor Source Mode. You can switch to using the 2010 Source Editor in your preferences.

I was using the source editor - you are right, it automatically switched me to the Visual Editor Source Mode. Switching back fixed the sluggishness of the editor (though it can't auto-complete links by typing the beginning of the link, like you could before). Thank you!Narve (talk) 16:03, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
Link suggest should be coming soon.

The interface to embed youtube videos changed? How to do it nowadays in the Wiki?[edit source]

Hello, I was adding some relevant youtube videos to two articles in this wiki (the first one that I added was a success and I believe that it was a solid contribution that made difference, I was nervous about people thinking that I was actually self-promoting me or something) but somehow I cannot find the method of using a link to add a Youtube link or code the Youtube video embed code and post it as an embed video. Did it change? Is it possible to post youtube embed videos? Sorry if it is obvious or if I missed something!

I can only find on Media button the option of uploading a video to the Wiki instead of using a link.

They changed the software for the Fandom wikis a few days ago - it may not be possible to embed videos anymore. This change is being made across all wikis, regardless of how users feel about it, so there is nothing we can do.Narve (talk) 06:07, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
You cannot "upload" a YouTube video to Fandom. When you add a video to the wiki, what you are doing is enabling it to be embedded. First add the video, then you add it to a page in a way similar to an image: [[File:Youtube video|right|400px]]

‘Development’ sections[edit source]

I would like to add some sort of ‘development’ or ‘production’ section to Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition citing interviews explaining why they modified the gameplay. The only problem is that I haven’t seen this kind of thing elsewhere on the project, so I don’t know if it would be a welcome addition.

Can I explain somewhere here why they made the changes that they did, or would that be outside of the project’s scope? —(((Rottweiler))) (Woof? Ruff!) 14:12, 14 October 2020 (UTC)

I don't know whether that would be a welcome improvement or not - my suggestion is to just add some content like that, and see how people react. If it gets reverted or criticised, it's probably outside the scope.Narve (talk) 17:57, 14 October 2020 (UTC)

Tooltips[edit source]

I'm sure the massive universal wiki update or whatever caused this. Tooltop templates seem to be broken when inside of an infobox. -- XZippy (talk) 10:17, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

I saw it. Not sure what we can do about it. By the way, did you see the message I left on your talk page? You've been locking article comments sections (not sure if it was intentional or not).Narve (talk) 15:39, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
It wasn't intentional. I was wondering what that "Commenting" checkmark was. I'll fix any page I ruined. Most of the time I never touched that option. The Doom wiki had the same issue - when users would save the page and comments would just disable without ever unchecking the box. -- XZippy (talk) 12:56, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

Report[edit source]

I want to report one unknown user who keeps undoing my format change of Commerce Age for unknown reasons, whose IP address s 49.199.121.123. Can you do something? Nikitazero 08:46, 18 October 2020 (UTC)

I've given him one final warning and reverted his changes. If he does it again, I'll block him.Narve (talk) 10:05, 18 October 2020 (UTC)

Delete image[edit source]

Hello! Could you delete this image? https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/File:Major_Cooper_and_Amelia_Black_on_Campaing_Screen.png

Deleted now.Narve (talk) 20:14, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

‘Source does not support claim’[edit source]

I realize that it’s an indirect source, but my intention was to clarify that it came from Dave Pottinger, who could confirm if prompted.

If you insist, I can just upload screenshots of our conversation, even though that would be rather cumbersome. Mostly, I just don’t want anybody dismissing the claims as baseless or false. —(((Rottweiler))) (Woof? Ruff!) 22:55, 22 October 2020 (UTC)

The problem was that you used a link in the source which didn't support the claim - people would think that the information came from his twitter page, which it didn't. If you instead type something like <ref>From a private conversation with designer Dave Pottinger.</ref>, with no link, it would be more obvious to anyone accessing the article where the information comes from (though uploading screenshots sounds like a good idea).Narve (talk) 14:20, 23 October 2020 (UTC)

Adding Expansion Sategory to AoE III Campaigns[edit source]

Hey Narve,

I added the introduced expansion category to campaigns that were introduced later on in expansions like how categorization is for AoE II pages.

I'm assuming these pages for AoE III follow the same principles as the campaigns for AoE II. Let me know if is is incorrect.

Best regards,

AmazingAncientWorld (talk) 23:07, 24 October 2020 (UTC)

I looked at the category policy page and I didn't see any issues; I don't see why AoE III campaigns would be categorized differently than AoE II campaigns.
Neverminded, The last pages of the The WarChiefs was categorized the way I thought it should be categorized, so I just categorized the other pages in the same way.

You're right, AoE3 campaigns and AoE2 campaigns should be categorized the same. We could theoretically remove the category from ALL scenarios, since the campaign category will already show which expansion it comes from (and thus redundant), but that's not the way we currently do it, so anyone who wants that will have to start a discussion.Narve (talk) 08:48, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

Unit Type Images[edit source]

Do you feel that the images for the AoE2 pages for archers, infantry, siege units etc. have good enough first images or should they be the DE sprites? -- XZippy (talk) 00:11, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

I think the images look good.Narve (talk) 07:45, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

Patch infobox[edit source]

Hi Narve, hope this isn't too much of a hassle to sort out, but are you able to add a field for the patch infobox that links the official patch notes page for each article? This way, there's a definitive reference to the changes made for each update without putting them in a section at the bottom of each page. DunBanner talk page 07:17, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

I've added the links to the two AoE3:DE patch articles. The URL looks really long, so there might be a better way to portray it, so I'll wait for feedback before adding it to more articles.Narve (talk) 07:45, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
Looks good, perhaps displaying each URL as Link or Update 3552 instead of https://www.ageofempires.com/news/aoe3de-update-3552/ might do the trick. DunBanner talk page 08:06, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
