Best abbreviation for the Asians[]

Hi! I noticed that some articles use the "AN" abbreviation for the Asians (Town Center, Market and Legendary Native Warriors) while others use "AS" (Wall and Native Embassy). Which one would look better? RkyRC (talk) 04:55, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

I think Asians makes more sense than Asians.Narve (talk) 11:13, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

Jagunço / Jagunco[]

I suggest renaming "Jagunco" to "Jagunço" and leave a redirect to align with the update in naming. Red Khan (talk) 12:03, 23 October 2021 (UTC)

Yes, I'll rename it.Narve (talk) 07:29, 24 October 2021 (UTC)

Adding Age of Empires IV to the main page[]

I think AoE4 should be added to the main page at https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Age_of_Empires_Series_Wiki Red Khan (talk) 15:49, 30 October 2021 (UTC)

Age of Empires 4 dialogue lines[]

I've managed to extract dialogue files of AoE4 units. But unlike in previous installations there are many more of them - if in previous games there were just three stances (Select, Move, Attack) here there are tens of them. And each one has a dozen lines. And that is for each unit.

Simply put, there are literally thousands of files, although their size is not big. I wanted to ask if it's OK to upload so many of them?

Red Khan (talk) 13:19, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

Yes, I don't see why not. Go ahead.Narve (talk) 19:37, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
OK. I'll need to think of a script that will automatically generate page code, since working manually with this number of files would take too much time. Red Khan (talk) 20:06, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

I also want to ask you for an advice on how to name files. In the game they look like this - rus_archer_acknowledge_ihigh_chigh_01. The first word is, obviously civ name, the second is unit name the third is the condition. The fourth one is, I guess, speaking tone. There is also a file named rus_archer_acknowledge_inorm_chigh_01 where exactly the same phrase is spoken in a more calm way. I have not idea about the last one, but there are four of them - chigh, cmed, clow and for some phrases - cnone. Problems:

  • Unique units still retain the name of the regular units they replace. So English longbowman's file name looks like english_archer_acknowledge_ihigh_chigh_01 and Russian strelets' - rus_handcannon_acknowledge_ihigh_chigh_01
  • As I mentioned before, there are a lot of conditions. While some are self-explanatory (acknowledge, attack, stop), I don't have any idea about the others (movesametypegc for example). You can see a full list for Rus archer here.

So what I think is to keep the original names, maybe just adding "_aoe4" at the end. Red Khan (talk) 20:18, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

That seems like a good idea. Keep the filename and add AoE4 at the end.Narve (talk) 09:56, 3 November 2021 (UTC)

OK, I've uploaded a first batch files - all dialogue files of Rus Archer. Can you please have a look at my sandbox, maybe you'll have some suggestions.

Also, can you please rename "Category:Dialogue lines" to "Dialogue lines (Age of Empires III)". I've never renamed a category before. And also can you please rename French dialogue lines to "French dialogue lines (Age of Empires III)" with updating all the links that lead to it? I think it will be easier for you since you have a bot set up for such a task. Red Khan (talk) 19:45, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

Pages renamed. I'll take a look at the sandbox later.Narve (talk) 10:41, 6 November 2021 (UTC)
Sorry, but if it's not too much trouble can you please rename French dialogue lines (Age of Empires III) back to just "French dialogue lines" and update all the links to that article? It's because there will be no seperate article for the AoE4, but a set of articles for each unit individually. Red Khan (talk) 13:17, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
Thanks! Did you have an opportunity to look at the sandbox? Red Khan (talk) 11:41, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
The design of the article is fine. ihigh, inorm and chigh are terrible headings, but maybe there's nothing better in the files? Having the four different versions of the same line next to each other looks good. Maybe the bit about archaic words is better suited in a trivia section at the bottom of the article? Also, remember that game titles are in italics. Other than that, great work!Narve (talk) 07:03, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
* "ihigh, inorm and chigh are terrible headings" - indeed they are. But at the moment there is no modding tools with which to look up what they are in the game files. Although I have some guesses:
* The part that begins with i (ihigh, inorm, istealth) is voice tone. Although no idea which is used when in the game.
* chigh, clow and cmed are harder to figure out. The articles about the French and the English state that the language changes and become more modern "as the ages progress" "in the late game", but I can't hear it neither in the English nor Rus lines. So maybe it's just it, different lines for different ages. But there are four ages and just three types of lines, so I'm not sure how they correspond with each other and can't check it in the game at the moment.
Anyway, these can be changed later with a simple replace function.
"Maybe the bit about archaic words is better suited in a trivia section at the bottom of the article?" I think it's better this way - for those words that are used multiple times (like the archaic word for "order") are better to be put in a separate section, but for those that are used just a couple of times it's better to put them either as a note to the line itself or after the heading of the section (by section I mean things like "acknowledge" or "attack") Red Khan (talk) 13:46, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

OK, put up a stub for the English dialogue lines. Hope somebody will come forward to clear things out. Red Khan (talk) 16:15, 20 November 2021 (UTC)

What I was thinking - the current English dialogue lines aricle is long as it is while containing only the Longbowman's lines. And there are still 18 units to add, which will make the article just enormous and unreadable.
So maybe it will be a better idea to make a separate article for each unit and place them into category named "English dialogue lines", which itself will be a subcategory of Category:Dialogue lines (Age of Empires IV). What do you think? Red Khan (talk) 18:29, 26 November 2021 (UTC)

That seems like a good solution.Narve (talk) 17:30, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
Implemented the changes. Red Khan (talk) 19:36, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

Wrong AOE4 link on frontpage[]

Hi, the link to the AOE4 portal page on the front page under "Around the wiki" seems to wrongly link to AOE3:portal, the text link is fine, but the image still links to AOE3. Can't edit it myself so just pointing it out. :)

AOE4: Units with alternate faction names?[]

Do you have any thoughts on how to best handle these cases? E.g. University/Madrasa, Knight/Lancer, Monastery/Mosque, etc... Make separate articles? Name articles after both? Pick one at the "original" and have the other listed as an alternate in the article? Arfelides (talk) 22:55, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Are the stats exactly the same? If so, it makes sense to have one as the "main" article. If not, we need multiple articles.Narve (talk) 15:43, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

Thanks again! And speaking about renamed civilizations, I just realized the same needs to be done with the renaming of Iroquois and Sioux, which were renamed to Haudenosaunee and Lakota, respectively, in DE (and I think that's all). Joaosantos92 (talk) 14:56, 6 November 2021 (UTC)

One more: [[Age of Empires II]] should be [[Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings|Age of Empires II]], to avoid showing the redirect thing after clicking on the link. Joaosantos92 (talk) 21:17, 6 November 2021 (UTC)

Expanding unit navBox with field for torch damage for AoE4?[]

A lot of units in Age of Empires IV have a special attack against buildings, throwing torches. Do you think it might be a good idea to expand the unit navbox with a specific field for this as to not overload the "Attack" field? Arfelides (talk) 14:18, 6 November 2021 (UTC)

Hi, even though I'm the moron adding info about torch damage I'd argue not to include it in the unit info at all. As far as I can tell right now all non-siege melee units have the same torch attack (10 in Dark Age, 13 in Feugal Age, 16 in Castle Age, 20 in Imperial Age, +10 vs Siege, Range 1, ROF 2 seconds). The only exception I know of are Villagers. Their torch attack doesn't scale with the Age. Maybe we could move that to the Melee Infntry/Melee Cavalry page once we have one?Kuchenschlachter (talk) 18:43, 6 November 2021 (UTC)

Removing Changelog from infobox[]

Hey, thanks for managing this wiki. I am also an avid contributor. I feel that when people look at infobox, all they want is an overview of the unit, so we should exclude the Changelog. While editing the Berserk page, I found that the HP box is a mess. We still can have civilization bonus effects in the infobox, like Berserks have 65 HP. I also think that team bonuses and civilization bonuses of a proper unique unit (so excludes Genitours, Condos and Elite Kipchaks) can be merged, because that team bonus is always there with the unit. Doing so we can also omit the name of the civ, because the unit is unique to the civ too. Also one guy asked me if an Armor classes page can be made for AoE1 too. I request you to rename the current page and corresponding pages for AoE2 and create a blank page for AoE1 armor classes (because Armor classes work differently in Age1). People will themselves write the content.

- [1]

The wiki standard is to include changelog information to make it easier to track changes to a stat (but it's only included in a tooltip, so it doesn't clutter up the page). Team bonuses and civilization bonuses are different things and are listed separately, even for unique units (though we could theoretically also just remove it, since it always applies). I've moved the page, but we don't create empty pages. If someone wants to enter the information, they can create the page, and if someone creates an empty page, I will delete it.Narve (talk) 19:45, 7 November 2021 (UTC)
Hi! I'm ok with keeping changelog info when it's too simple, but when there were too many changes (some back and forwards) the tooltip gets too long and confusing. One example is the price info of unique units with cost reduction bonuses, which mentions both what the cost would be without the bonus and how the bonus changed. Regardind civ and team bonuses, I prefer listing them the way it is. Of course if we're talking about a unique unit, it's obvious which civ it is, but I find it more user friendly to have the possibility of clicking on the civ page right there to get more info about the bonus (such as if it applies to other units). Editing rights for Age of Empires IV article[]

Hi, I'd like to replace the content of the units section of the Age of Empires IV article with the Unit List Template and also add a section for technologies/Technology List Template but the page is protected against editing. Links to renamed pages[]

Hi! I renamed several pages because there are units/buildings in AoE4 with the same name. I'll leave the list here in case you want to use the Bot to edit the links to those pages. Joaosantos92 (talk) 21:02, 9 November 2021 (UTC)

Incorrect Armors for buildings[]

Buildings in AoE4 have fire armor instead of melee armor. Fire attack is used mostly by melee units only, but the values differ. Please look into it. Sauravt2812 16:44, 10 November 2021 (UTC)

Messed Jan Zizka[]

Hi! I was editing the campaigns navigation box by separating reboots from original ones. I seemed to have done everything correctly yet Jan Zizka campaign does not show up. Please help me rectify it. Thank you. Sauravt2812 20:04, 25 November 2021 (UTC)

Sauravt, I honestly fail to see how the changes improve on the previous template layout as the purpose of that design is to accomodate both HD and DE players in distinguishing which original/reworked (also renamed) scenario to click on. The ones for DE aren't actually reboots and there's now too much duplication under the DE section. We can add a note beneath the section title or at the template bottom like we have for Age 1 campaigns. DunBanner talk page 00:20, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
I agree, I think the previous version of the navbox was clearer. As for the original question, navboxes are only coded up to 50 lines - we have to expand the code if we want more.Narve (talk) 16:19, 26 November 2021 (UTC)

Minor Iroquois civ unit names[]

I just noticed that the article names for the units of minor Iroquois civ differ - Iroquois Mantlet but Haudenosaunee Tomahawk. Is it according to the game? As far as I know this minor civ was replaced by Huron in the Warchiefs and the renaming of Iroquois to Haudenosaunee was in the Definitive Edition. Red Khan (talk) 20:28, 26 November 2021 (UTC)

The Iroquois Mantlet has also been renamed to Haudenosaunee in the Definitive Edition (though the only way to see it is in the campaigns, or the Scenario Editor, since it's no longer available from The Mohawk Statesman when aging up).Narve (talk) 17:30, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
In this case I think that Iroquois Mantlet article should be renamed too. Red Khan (talk) 18:56, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

Struggling with AoE3Icon template[]

Hi, I was wondering if you could help me by explaing how I can properly use the AoE3Icon template at pages (for example the recently added Mexicans page). I have added the pictures for the units but I cant seem to understand how to add these in front of the names on the page of the Mexicans, whilst this has happened to some of the units already. Any information is appreciated. HeerDerHeren (talk)

You type {{AoE3Icon|Name of unit/technology/building here}}. The unit must have been added to Template:AoE3Icon first.Narve (talk) 07:28, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

Why remove pictures?[]

Pictures I add on Fire Lancer page are the real world reference materials.Other page like chu ko nu also got some.

I think these are useful additions to the article.Grallan (talk) 21:37, 14 January 2022 (UTC)

Images on other articles are far better at depicting the real-life equivalent. I just don't think your images were good enough depictions of a Fire Lancer - they just didn't add anything useful to the article. Images in an article must be there for a reason.Narve (talk) 10:15, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
"far better at depicting the real-life equivalent"
--really? like those picture in chu ko nu page?
Objectively, their conditions are very similar. Particularly, the second picture and the fourth picture are from the same book. If I add some description under pictures I post , they will get almost same conditions in their pages.Grallan (talk) 16:51, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
No, objectively, your images are worse depictions. They don't add anything of value to the article. The fact that they're from the same book is irrelevant.Narve (talk) 18:57, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
You can't explain why it's worse. Just simply don't like it.Grallan (talk) 19:28, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
Those pictures can provide the real-life equivalent of the fire lance, and so far you can't find any better one ,so they get values to exist in that article.Grallan (talk) 19:45, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
The Chu Ko Nu images are decent-quality pictures, one in colour of the weapon, the other of the weapon in use. The other images are low-quality pictures of Chinese text along with something that might be the discussed weapon. They are not comparable. The fact that no better pictures can be found doesn't make them valuable. If you want them in the article, stop clogging up my talk page and get other people to agree with you. That is how consensus formsNarve (talk) 20:44, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
You think medieval pictures quality should as good as contemporary photography? It's impossible. And where are discussions about other "low quality" pictures? They don't exist.Grallan (talk) 22:47, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
