—Description

The Polynesians are an Austronesian civilization introduced in The Oceanic Kingdoms, their focus is on Infantry and Navy. Historically the Polynesian people originated in Melanesia as a branch of the Lapita Culture which emerged at around 1500 BC, the Lapita people stablished in the islands of Rotuma, Samoa and Tonga by around 900 BC and this remained their furthest extent of the migrations for around 1500 years, in which Polynesian culture was forming. At around 700 AD the Polynesians started to explore and settle furtherly to the rest of the Pacific Ocean spreading to the Cook Islands, French Polynesia, and the Marquesas. From here, they spread further to Hawaii by 900 AD, Easter Island by 1000 AD, and finally New Zealand by 1200 AD. Since the very beginning of the formation of Polynesian culture they were highly connected to the sea. In order to represent the great Polynesian migrations and naval prowess, their Transport ships does not take any population and support population (10/15/20/25 population each transport ship in Dark/Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age), Galleys increases range in Castle and Imperial Age and Catamaran move progessively faster with each age.

Despite the limitations of their available resources and technology they discovered and invented several navigation techniques that helped them to find and settle new islands, one important innovation were the Stick Charts which were basically a map made of sea shells ( wich represented islands) Sticks and ropes ( which represented sea currents). To represent this their Unique technology Stick Charts provides +2 attack to the Galley line and Catamaran line and +2 Line of sight to every ship.

War in Polynesia was very ritualistic in nature, they developed war dances like the Haka in New Zealand that had spiritual significance but also were used to intimidate enemies. To represent this their Unique technology War Dances makes all Polynesian infantry to Attack and move 10% faster. Ritual Cannibalism existed all throughout Polynesia and usually a speciall class of warriors were commanded to take victims from enemy villages near their settlements for ritual cannibalism, to represent this their unique unit Hoeroa Warrior have high attack, Attack bonuses against Villagers, Monks and buildings, and generate food while attacking. Throghout all Polynesia the cult to ancestors were spread and for that they made Tiki Statues so in game Polynesians can build Tiki Statues that can heal Military units in a 7 tile radius and can be created by their unique unit the Hoeroa Warrior.

Birds were venerated all througout Polynesia and in some places like Rapa Nui there were rituals about " bird Men" so they have access to Eagle Warriors. One of the primary weapons Polynesians used was the spear; in order to represent this their Skirmishers and Spearmen lines improves attack when they are nearby other Skirmishers or spearmen ( maximum +5 attack). They also used a variety of ranged weapons so they also have access to the Slinger.

Finally the Polynesians sadly were a very predatorial culture, this trait was probably the cause of several extintions of animals on the islands they discovered (like the extintion of Moas in New Zealand) and this trait also probably put on the brink of his disappearance the Rapa Nui culture as they unconsciously deforested their Island in order to make room for more crops. To represent this Polynesian Villagers collect non-renewable sources of food 10% faster and fishing ships  and Fishermen collect fish 5% faster.

Overview[]

The Polynesians Main strenght is their navy, they are well suited for early Galley rushes thanks to their faster Catamarans and long ranged Galleys while having full upgrades for these units and despite not having access to Cannon Galleons (Stick Charts make up for this as this technology gives +2 attack to both of these units also the Galley line with their extra range can outrange Castles and Towers with few exceptions), they also are enabled to land very early on an opponent island thanks to their free population Transport ships that also works as a housing unit wich enables Polynesians to save wood from houses since each transport ship allows 10/15/20/25 population in Dark /Feudal /Castle/ Imperial ages as well as their docks enables 5 population each.

The fact they are a naval Civilization doesn't mean they are defenseless on land. Their economy is also strong as they collect a bit faster from every non-renewable food item on the map (this includes fish, herdables, huntable animals and bushes of course) They also have strong infantry being enabled to pull out an early Spearmen and Skirmisher rush on Feudal age thanks to their economy and the special bonuses for these units ( increasing attack when they are nearby other spearmen and skirmishers +5 maximum) which also have full upgrades plus War Dances Unique technology. The synergy between their main units ( Hoeroa Warriors + Halberdiers, complemented with Eagle Warriors and Slingers or Skirmishers on the back) works well on the latter stages of the game.
