Upgrades are technologies in Age of Empires II that allow the creation of better military units and construction of improved versions of buildings. The unit upgrade of a unit transforms the unit into a better version of itself, usually with an increase in attributes. All existing units, except converted units, are upgraded. Unit upgrades are shown directly below the unit in the user interface of the building in which they are created. Building upgrades, except for upgrading Docks to Harbors, are all done at the University.
All the Castle unique units can be upgraded to the Elite version of themselves. This elite upgrade becomes available in the Imperial Age. There are some civilizations which have a unique upgrade to a unit which is exclusive to them.
For the Gurjaras, the Camel Scout is automatically upgraded to the Camel Rider upon reaching the Castle Age. Among other units, the Scout Cavalry, Camel Scout, and Serjeant also receive important buffs upon advancing through the Ages. Upgrades which add "not-so-significant" statistics (like Line of Sight) are not mentioned.
While most upgrades are known and available to the player, some upgrades are granted free with Age-ups. These do not change the cosmetics of the unit, only the statistics. Nonetheless, they are included here for completeness.

Trivia[]
- Only the Imperial Skirmisher and Elite Mangudai upgrades do not add hit points.
- The upgrade of the Serjeant (between the Feudal and Castle Ages) is the only free unit upgrade which adds hit points.
- Technically, the Folwark is an upgrade of the Mill and the Fortified Church is an upgrade of the Monastery. They both occur automatically, with the player never owning the precursor buildings, so they are not considered as actual upgrades from the player's perspective.
- The cut technology Revetments upgraded Palisade Walls into Fortified Palisade Walls.
