Update 17.18697 is the Advanced Access release version of Age of Mythology: Retold. The rework overhauls the game extensively.
Tale of the Dragon[]
Most of the content added in Tale of the Dragon (not just the Chinese and their campaign) has been removed, including the following:
- Greek Hippocrates
- Egyptian Khopesh Swordsman
- Norse Bogsveigir
- Atlantean Onager
- Fauna such as the Panda Bear, Yak, and Duck
Retentions:
- Most balance and stat changes
- Blue Lagoon map
- Regent (though the Regicide map has been removed, it is now available as a game mode that can be played on any map)
Engine[]
- Based on the Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition version of the Bang Engine.
- Naval units can traverse shallow water.
- New tmm and "composite" formats for models instead of GR2 from AoE3DE or GRN and BRG from the original Age of Mythology.
- New version of the DDT texture format.
- Removal of Proto(type) IDs allowing for more robust additive-data modding.
- The addition of new functions and triggers, such as allowing random maps to generate walls.
- Physics-based building damage and destruction graphics. Also applies to ships and large siege weapons.
- Units can push other units when moving. The pushing power of units as well as their resistance to being pushed are determined by the
weightclass
parameter in the unit records in the prototype file (proto.xml
). - Auto Scout and Villager Priority introduced.
- Units targeting a particular moving unit from a distance move at an angle to intercept the target in the shortest time at its future position, rather than beeline to the target's current position.
- The PC version of the game now also supports controllers.
- Player Colors:
- Players can change how each player color looks in their own client in the Accessibility settings. Sets of custom colors can also be saved.
- Players can now select and change player colors during custom game setup.
- Unit icons now visually reflect player color.
- Built-in CaptureAge-like recorded game replayer.
- Hotkeys and more stats like projectile number, reload time, movement speed, and attack bonuses are displayed in the command and information panels.
- The Scenario Editor has a text filter option to find objects faster.
- The game notifies the player when approaching the population space capacity.
- The game supports ray tracing.
- Certain units (such as Behemoth) now have directional armor, where their armor values can change depending on which direction they are being attacked from, to encourage flanking attacks.
- Technologies can be added to the build queue even without sufficient resources by right clicking, so that they are researched as soon as there are enough resources.
- Buildings now have visual effects that are applied to them when they are placed on specific terrain types:
- On snowy/icy terrain, buildings are covered in a thin layer of snow.
- On sandy terrain, buildings are covered in a thin layer of sand.
- On marshy terrain, buildings look grungy and are covered in mold and moss.
- On burnt terrain, buildings will look grungy and burnt.
- On marsh dirt terrain, buildings will look covered in mud.
General balance[]
- Removed the Favor cap.
- Increased the population cap from 300 → 1000.
- Minor miscellaneous objects and units that were present in the original game, such as the Golden Fleece and Giant Duck-Billed Platypus, have been removed.
- Resource drop site foundation can be selected from a resource's command panel, and when placed, a nearby idle Villager will be automatically tasked to it.
- Ranged units such as archers and buildings now use a simpler accuracy system like Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, and have decreased accuracy against moving targets overall (originally all ranged units were able to accurately track units moving at 5 m/s or less).
- Researching the new technology Ballistics at the Armory is required for ranged units to shoot at moving units accurately.
- Town Centers, Village Centers, and Citadels now inherently have the effect of Ballistics.
- Divine attack type added. Several units have divine attack by default (Man O' War, Myrmidon, etc) while others may gain it from specific myth technologies.
- Units can be healed by multiple healer units, not just one.
- In Standard victory condition, only units (excluding Caravans), Town Centers, Temples, and fortress-type buildings count for survival. If a player loses all of these (but still has other buildings like Archery Range, Market, etc.), they will be defeated.
- Changed AIs. Titan difficulty no longer has an increased handicap by 100%. Added Extreme and Legendary difficulty levels. While both improve further how the AI behaves, they also have an increased handicap by respectively 25% and 50%.
- Pantheon Overview Videos have been redone with new voiceovers, footage and cover the reworked mechanics.
- A new Greek Overview video, narrated by Athena, is added, covering their military units, Favor generation and heroes.
- Regeneration effects no longer reduce when units are not idle, while healing still does.
Maps[]
- Added several maps: Arena, Aïr, Giza, Elysium, Gold Rush, Ironwood, Kerlaugar, Mirage, Mirkwood, Mount Olympus, Muspellheim, Nile Shallows, and Tiny.
- Removed maps: King of the Hill, Sudden Death, and Regicide — these are all now available as Skirmish game modes for any map.
- Numerous changes have been made to existing maps:
- Acropolis no longer generates a statue of each player's major god near their Town Center.
- Alfheim now has autumnal oak trees and natural lighting, instead of pine trees and eerie golden lighting. The Greek-style columns have been changed to Nordic-style columns, and the Ruins object is no longer present.
- Anatolia now has grassy terrain with snow instead of sand and snow.
- Archipelago now generates mountains around the map, which can appear on land or in the sea.
- Black Sea now has grassy terrain with snow instead of sand and snow. It also now has rain precipitation effects.
- Erebus now generates mostly small pits of lava, rather than long rivers. The rare River Styx-style water variation has been removed. Statues of Hades now appear near Relics instead of the Column and Ruins objects.
- Highland now has a mix of grass and dirt terrain, instead of verdant grass. The rivers are slightly wider than in the original map.
- Jotunheim no longer has random rocks and boulders appearing across the map.
- Megalopolis now has desert sand terrain instead of savannah grass, with sparse patches of verdant grass appearing under berry bushes. The map now has only palm forests, instead of the original map's mix of palm, oak, and acacia trees.
- Marsh now has mostly muddy grass terrain in the area surrounding the wetland, instead of verdant grass.
- Nomad now generates as a complete island, like its Age of Empires and Age of Empires II incarnations, instead of being coastal with water on only three sides of the map. A new Greek biome variant of the map has been added alongside the existing Egyptian biome.
- River Nile now has grass lining the riverbanks, but no longer has lily pads in the water.
- River Styx has deeper water, and no longer has stalagmites in the water as they would be too deep below the surface to be visible. Ruins no longer generate on this map.
- Sea of Worms now has autumnal oak trees instead of pine trees, and tundra terrain instead of mostly snow and sand. Players no longer start with a Fortress, Migdol Stronghold, Hill Fort, or Palace in place of Sentry Towers.
- Team Migration now has the player starting islands covered entirely with sand instead of grass.
- Tundra now has terrain covered in much more permafrost, and no longer has snowfall precipitation effects.
- Valley of Kings no longer has Bandit Migdols protecting the map's gold. Instead, there are now shrines near relics on the map, though they are purely decorative and pose no threat to players. Statue of Lion and Fallen Column objects no longer generate, and all players now generate with Sentry Towers near their Town Center.
- Vinlandsaga no longer features Skraelings, pursuant to their complete removal from the game.
- Forbidden distance from neutral Settlements to build walls decreased from 10 tiles to 8 tiles, for Gold Mines decreased from 4 tiles to 3 tiles.[1]

Buildings[]

- Offensive building (also including Helepoleis and Siege Towers):
- Changed garrisoning logic from allowing any villager, infantry, ranged soldier, hero, Ox Cart, and Oracle → any unit except cavalry, myth units, siege weapons, ships ships, and resources. Consequently, buildings can no longer garrison Achilles, Bellerophon, Chariot Archers, Ox Carts, Contarii (Hero), Turmae, Turmae (Hero), and relic units, and they can now also garrison Caravans and Regents.

Units[]
- Abilities:
- Can be activated by players at will, rather than cast by the unit automatically.[2] By default, a unit's charged ability is set to trigger automatically (like in the original game).
- All one-hit kill unit abilities of land units are replaced with modified versions. For example, Medusai petrification will deal 400 damage regardless of resistances, and any unit capable of surviving the damage will be temporarily petrified, gaining lowered crush armor but increased hack and pierce armor for the duration. Perseus petrification now applies to human soldiers too and deals 300 irresistible damage, Cyclops throw does not kill the thrown unit and only damages it, etc.
- Builder:
- Changed build time rates, and removed most of the building-specific bonuses or maluses.

- Myth unit:
- Early-Age myth units gain hit points and other attributes on age-ups, thus remaining competitive even in the late game. They also get visually larger on age-ups. Myth units scale with +20% hit points, attack (including damage over time) and heal ability efficiency per age-up. All these bonuses (as well as the bonus from Wonder Age) stack additively from the base value. (Example: Minotaur HP: 320 in Classical (base value), 384 in Heroic (120%), 448 in Mythic (140%), 768 in Wonder Age (240%).) Upgrades or bonuses which affect myth units' hit points and attack will be added up with the age-up scaling.
- All civilizations can get at least two naval myth units irrespective of chosen minor gods, though any upgrade technologies stick with the original minor gods. The myth units are:
