Underworld Passage is a Greek Heroic Age god power in Age of Mythology that is available to worshipers of Apollo, as well as the name of the building sprung by this god power.

God power[]

When invoked, the Underworld Passage god power creates two portals between two locations on the map. Units entering one are instantly transported to the other. The Passage has 1,800 hit points. Either end can be repaired by a Villager, but if one end is destroyed, the other one will also automatically destroy itself.

Building[]

A pair of Underworld Passages are created when the eponymous god power is invoked. These are regular structures that can be targeted and destroyed by enemies. The player or their allies can garrison their units in one Underworld Passage, which instantly transports and ungarrisons them at the other connected Underworld Passage. Further, rally points can be set at each Underworld Passage to move ungarrisoned units to a particular location or target object.

Any unit with a recharging special ability bar loses all charge when passing through the Underworld Passage. If one of a pair of Underworld Passages is destroyed, the other one falls as well. Airborne units cannot enter an Underworld Passage, only land units may.

Bonuses[]

  • HadesPortrait Hades: The Underworld Passage have 25% more hit points (+450 hit points).

Changelog[]

Aom original icon Age of Mythology[]

  • The pierce armor of the Underworld Passage is 70%.

AoM Extended icon Tale of the Dragon[]

  • With patch 2.7, Underworld Passage's pierce armor is 85%.
  • With patch 2.8, its pierce armor is 80%.

In-game description[]

Apollo's God Power creates a permanent (until destroyed) tunnel through the Underworld, which may be used to travel almost instantly from one point to another on the map.

To use the Underworld Passage, left click on the Underworld Passage icon, then left click where you want one end of the passage to be. Left click again in a different location to place the other end of the Underworld passage.

Place one end in your town and the other end in an ally's town to allow quick reinforcements and speedy retreats. Use it to circumvent walls and defenses or even place one end deep in enemy territory for a sneak attack. The passage remains in place as long as the entrance and exit are intact.

Strategy[]

There are many applications for this god power. If the player has spread their forces too thin, the Underworld Passage allows armies to be transported quickly to wherever they are needed. It can also be used to bypass an enemy's defenses and attack them where they are vulnerable. However, the player should be careful when placing it since if one of the Portals is destroyed the power is forfeited.

On maps like Archipelago, Team Migration, River Nile, and Islands, the Underworld Passage can become a very efficient and secure way to transport units between two islands or crossing the river, thus negating the need for Transport Ships. On maps like Jotunheim, where the map is divided by mountains and where there are only narrow chokepoints from where the players can invade each other's positions, Underworld Passage can be used for a sneak attack.

It should be noted that Titans cannot pass through the Underworld Passage. Also, depending on the map and placement of each end of the Underworld Passage, Azure Dragons and War Salamanders can either choose to go into the Underworld Passage or bypass it altogether due to being amphibious myth units. If the Azure Dragons and War Salamanders are made to cross the body of water instead, the player will have more room for units to transport through the Underworld Passage.

Campaign building[]

Allows passage into the underworld.

The object also named Underworld Passage is a decorative building present in several campaign scenarios and accessible in the Scenario Editor. It represents passages which lead to the underworld (Erebus, Niflheim, Diyu), as well as to Olympus, rather than as portals like the Underworld Passage created by the god power or the Well of Urd.

This building also has a garrison capacity of 25, and can be garrisoned by not only land units, but also airborne units, and naval units if they can reach it.

Mythology[]

This passage leads into and out of the Underworld. Entering the Underworld is easy, getting out - there's the rub.
