Mythology[]
| “ | The second-to-last child of Izanagi and Izanami, Tsukuyomi is the god of night and the moon. He is typically paired in mythology with his sister Amaterasu, the sun goddess. However, much like Amaterasu’s other brother Susanoo, Tsukuyomi often made havoc for her. Once, Amaterasu sent Tsukuyomi to meet a goddess named Ukemochi, the kami of food. After witnessing what he believed was an act of pollution, Tsukuyomi killed Ukemochi, drawing the ire of Amaterasu. Some versions of the myth state that this was when Tsukuyomi was given dominion over the moon so Amaterasu never had to set eyes on him again. | ” |

Trivia[]
- Tsukuyomi's name literally means "Moon Reader", which is a reference to how ancient and medieval astronomers followed the lunar cycle across the sky every night, and how people once used the moon as a way to mark their months.
- In Japanese-language sources, Tsukuyomi is usually named 月読命 (Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto), a traditional honorific form roughly translating to "Tsukuyomi the Great".
- The halo found encircling Tsukuyomi's head on his in-game Major God Statue seems to be depicting the lunar phases.
