Try a Game is the second tutorial scenario in Age of Empires III, recommended for players with experience in other Real Time Strategy games, or new players who have finished Master the Basics. This scenario is essentially like a 1 vs. 1 random map match against an AI, but with some changes like starting units, and the presence of a narrator as well as pop-ups explaining the various gameplay elements and objects in the map.

Scenario instructions[]

Objectives[]

  • Train two additional Settlers while exploring the New World.
    • You can train more Settlers at your Town Center, if you have enough Food. You will need eight Settlers to complete the objective. Hunt animals for Food, or send Food from your Home City.
  • Build a Manor to increase your population limit.
    • A British Manor provides population, which can be used to train additional soldiers and Settlers. You will need Wood to build Manors.
  • Advance to the Commerce Age. (200 XP)
    • To advance to the Commerce Age, select the Town Center, left-click the Age Advancement button, and then choose a politician. To advance, you will need 500 food. Food may be gathered from animals or Mills.
  • Advance to the Fortress Age. (200 XP)
    • To advance to the Fortress Age, you need 500 food, 250 coin. Keep training Settlers at your Town Center. Don't forget to build more Manors to support your population.
  • Advance to the Industrial Age. (200 XP)
    • To advance to the Industrial Age, you need 1,000 food, 500 coin. If the Mines near your town run out, send Settlers to more distant ones, or build a Estate.
  • Destroy the Enemy Colony. (300 XP)
    • Build an Artillery Foundry to train Mortars. Mortars are good at destroying buildings but they need to be protected with other units. When you have a large army, attack!

Players[]

Player[]

  • England ( British): The player begins in the southwest of the map with a Town Center, Settlers, an Explorer, and also some troops.

Enemy[]

  • Spain ( Spanish): The Spanish have a typical starting base in the northeast of the map.

Pop-ups[]

The Home City

During a game, return to the Home City now and then to use the Experience earned from fighting and building to send Shipments. Shipments from the Home City will be delivered to your Town Center.
Experience

As you play through Age of Empires III you will be noticing Experience numbers flying off units and buildings as you build and destroy them. this experience will go towards upgrading your home city and earning shipments throughout the story mode missions and in multiplayer games.
Upgrading your Home City

The Home City is not only a source of Shipments during the game. at the end of a game, you may also return to the Home City and choose new shipment types, called Cards. if this had been a real game, you could now choose a new Card to send during all future games. every civilization has a different set of Cards - try them all!

Treasures[]

There are 3 treasures on the map:

Pots of indigo worth 70 coin 2x Alligator In the west of the map

The map[]

The map is based on the skirmish version of the Carolina map. The player has a Trade Route in the middle of the map and a Haudenosaunee native post. The player can ally with them to stop the Spanish attacks from the northeast. In the south, the player has Whales to get coin.

Trivia[]

  • In the Definitive Edition, upon discovering the Haudenosaunee minor native village, the narrator still refers to them as the Iroquois.
  • This scenario is loosely based on the first definitive attempt at English colonization in the New World with the founding of the colony of Jamestown in 1607.
