The Torp is a civilian building in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition that replaces the House for the Swedes. It is similar in function to Houses, but are 40 wood more expensive and automatically gather resources. A Berry Bush also spawns next to a Torp when one is built, but this Berry Bush only yields 200 food.

Strategy

Torps can gather resources at the following rate:

• Berry Bushes: 0.30 food/s and gather range of 6.1.
• Blueberry Bushes: 0.50 food/s and gather range of 6.1.
• Cherry Orchard: 0.335 food/s and gather range of 6.1.
• Huntables: 0.42 food/s and gather range of 14.
• Trees, Mango Grove : 0.05 wood/s and gather range of 6.2, can gather from maximum of 5 trees, maximum gather rate of 0.25 wood/s.
  • The "Great Northern Forests" Home City Card increases gather range to 14 and maximum gather limit to 14, maximum gather rate of 0.70 wood/s.
• Mines: 0.27 coin/s and gather range of 6.1.
  • Gathers 0.54 coin/s with the "Engelsberg Ironworks" Home City Card.
• Crates: 4.0/s and gather range of 14, can gather from multiple crates (requires the "Dominions" Home City Card)

Definitive Edition

• Originally, Torps cost 115 wood, have a placement restriction range of 5, spawn Berry Bushes with 150 food, and gave 23 XP when built and 46 XP when destroyed. With update 13088, they cost 125 wood, have a placement restriction range of 7.8, spawn Berry Bushes with 125 food, and give 25 XP when built and 50 XP when destroyed. With update 14825, they have a placement restriction range of 6 and spawn Berry Bushes with 200 food. With update 20322, they cost 135 wood.
• Originally, Torps had a ranged attack range of 9. Although is not listed in the patch notes, with update 14825, Torps have a ranged attack range of 11.5.
• Torps have 1,500 hit points, a Berry Bush gather rate of 0.335 food/second, a Blueberry Bush gather rate of 0.57 food/second, a mine gather rate of 0.30 coin/second, cannot be constructed on Ice terrain, and the hunting attack is a default feature.

The African Royals

• With update 38254, Torps have 1,300 hit points, a Berry Bush gather rate of 0.30 food/second, a Blueberry Bush gather rate of 0.50 food/second, a mine gather rate of 0.27 coin/second, can be constructed on Ice terrain, the hunting attack is no longer a default feature, and upon reaching the Imperial Age, all Torp construction placement restrictions are removed.

Knights of the Mediterranean

• With update 13.58326, Torps cost 140 wood.
• With update 14.43676, Torp building time was changed from 16 to 19 seconds.

History

“	Going back to the medieval period, Scandinavian farmers commonly established farmstead in the countryside away from settlements, seeking to make their fortune off of the land. These torps were constructed from the locally available materials: usually stone and wood, but also occasionally making use of turf roofs and siding, which insulated the structure and prevented leaking. Torps were self-sufficient and often developed over time into larger settlements and even villages. During the Swedish Empire, torps evolved into small or leased agricultural plots with their own tax obligations and even supplied men for the king's military levy; however, as the region gradually urbanized and evolved agriculturally, their importance and productivity gradually declined.	”

Trivia

• The Torp was a building featured in the Napoleonic Era mod. In the mod, the building combines a Barracks with a House, and has a wood trickle.
  • One of the developers of the mod worked on the Definitive Edition.
