“ | Elite, heavily armoured cavalry who dismounts and fights on when felled. Good against cavalry and ranged soldiers. | ” |
The Tiger Cavalry is a guandao-wielding cavalry unit available to the Chinese in Age of Mythology: Retold - Immortal Pillars. It can be trained at the Baolei starting in the Mythic Age.
Special abilities[]
Unyielding Resolve (passive): Continues fighting as infantry when dismounted.[note 1]
Last Stand (passive, requires Last Stand): Gains more armor as it loses hit points.
Tactics[]
Unlike most other Chinese human soldiers, who are somewhat worse than their counterparts in other pantheons, Tiger Cavalry are one of the strongest human soldiers in the game even before myth technologies come into effect. Their ability to transition into infantry upon being unhorsed adds another layer of utility, and effectively provides two units for the same population space. To offset these strengths, Tiger Cavalry are also some of the costliest human soldiers in the game, but their relatively low gold cost makes them viable once the player has a strong farming economy set up.

History[]
“ | The Tiger Cavalry (sometimes also called Tiger-Leopard Cavalry) were the most formidable cavalry unit during the Three Kingdoms period in China (220-280 CE) and the years of strife leading up to it. This unit was established by the powerful warlord Cao Cao, whose son would later go on to establish the Wei kingdom. Cao Cao selected the best warriors from his family and his most loyal subordinates to form this elite unit. The Tiger Cavalry served not only as bodyguards and shock troops in battle but also as special forces for long-range raids. When required, these troops could dismount and operate as elite infantry, particularly in roles such as bodyguards or during siege warfare. |

Trivia[]
- In Chinese, this unit is historically recorded as 虎騎 (Simplified Chinese: 虎骑) or 虎豹騎 (Simplified Chinese: 虎豹骑), but the in-game translations are 虎骑兵 for Simplified Chinese and 老虎騎兵 for Traditional Chinese.
- Its ability is reminiscent of the Konnik in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - The Last Khans.
- The armor of the Tiger Cavalry resembles heavy cavalry of the early Jin dynasty (265–420 AD), which were improvements on early forms which emerged in the Three Kingdoms period.

Notes[]
- ↑ Certain abilities and effects can overrule the death spawning ability of Tiger Cavalry, preventing the dismounted version of Tiger Cavalry from being produced. This happens if the effect entirely removes or replaces the unit, for e.g. Taotie's Fuel Consumption ability, Spider Lair, Curse, and Lampades's Transfiguration ability.
