The Viceroy is an Industrial Age politician in Age of Empires III, available to the British, Dutch, Germans, and Portuguese. As soon as the player advances to the Industrial Age by choosing him, the following appears in the Home City shipment point:
- British – 5 Settlers and 500 food
- Dutch – 5 Merchants and 400 coin
- Germans – 3 Settler Wagons and 300 wood
- Portuguese – 6 Fishing Boats and 400 wood
Before the Definitive Edition, The Viceroy is available to the Germans at a level 20 Home City and the Dutch at a level 40 Home City, and ships 4 Settlers along with the following units:
- British – 3 Grenadiers
- Dutch – 3 Ruyters
- Germans – 3 Uhlans
- Portuguese – 3 Dragoons
Strategy[]
The Viceroy offers a late-game economic boost, which may help for a strategy like a Fast Revolution or a Fast Imperial Age. Each civilization that has access to the Viceroy gets a different resource. Considering villagers in Age of Empires III have a creation limit, The Viceroy can surpass that limit a bit.
- British: The Viceroy may be used as a preparation for revolting, especially if picking Canada or South Africa, both revolutions with a lot of focus on economy. Otherwise. the extra villagers will turn into revolutionaries if the player decides to go for United States or Egypt.
- Dutch: The Dutch have a lower Settler limit than other European civilizations, so The Viceroy for them is highly valuable. Similarly to the British, they may also use the economic boost for revolting. For the Dutch, The Viceroy may be followed up with South Africa (which boosts the economy even more), Brazil (in which every Settler is turned intotwo Voluntarios da Patria), Indonesia, or the United States. If the player decides to instead age up to the Imperial Age for a mercenary strategy, The Viceroy may play a similar role to The Tycoon by giving an economic boost and making a follow-up with The Mercenary Contractor.
- Germans: Settler Wagons have a low creation limit of 20, not to mention that for training them, the Germantown Farmers shipment is needed. With The Viceroy, they may have 23 of them, which is good. Settler Wagons work as fast as two Settlers, and count as one unit, so their Mills and Estates (which have a limited room for workers) are more productive. Also, if the German player didn't have the Germantown Farmer shipment in the deck, they can still get this unit, which does not count for the Settler creation limit. The 300 cords of wood are almost enough to immediately build a mill.
- Portuguese: Unlike the other civilizations, the Portuguese get Fishing Ships and some wood, which makes The Viceroy a good option on naval maps, but should be avoided on land maps. The Viceroy can be a great preparation for revolting into the Barbary States or Gran Colombia, as these revolutions have a naval focus.
