Harumoto pursues Kagemasa into the lands of the Oni, hoping to prevent an enemy alliance.
—Scenario description

The Red Giant is the seventh scenario of the Yasuko's Tale campaign in Age of Mythology: Retold - Heavenly Spear.

This scenario introduces Shuten Doji as a minor antagonist.

Starting conditions[]

This section is most likely incomplete and may need expansion. You can help by adding to it.

Objectives[]

Stop Kagemasa
  • Destroy Kagemasa's camp. (Kagemasa has set up a camp outside the walls of Shuten-Dōji's fortress, leaving him exposed. Attack quickly!)
Defeat Shuten-Dōji
  • Destroy both of Shuten-Dōji's Castles. (Shuten-Dōji is your most powerful opponent, capable of fielding large armies and possessing a great fortress. His defenses are formidable, but he may be more vulnerable to attacks from the north and south.)
  • (Optional) Stop the prisoner convoy before it reaches Shuten-Dōji's fortress. (Rescue the prisoners from the Oni convoy to gain additional units.)

Spotlight[]

Spotlight: Japanese Cavalry and Siege

The Japanese train cavalry units at the Stable.

Naginata Riders are strong against ranged infantry.

Yumi Horse Archers are fast, mobile ranged units.

Daimyo are heroic leaders who excel in close combat against any enemy they can reach.

The Oyumi, the Japanese siege weapon, is trained at the Castle. It is a long-range crossbow capable of piercing through multiple units with each shot, making it highly effective against large groups of enemies.

Players[]

This section is most likely incomplete and may need expansion. You can help by adding to it.

Player[]

Neutral → Enemy[]

  • Shuten-Dōji ( Susanoo): Owns a huge base on the eastern half of the map, filled with military production buildings and defensive structures. Sometime after the start of the scenario, Shuten-Dōji will declare the player an enemy.

Enemy[]

  • Kagemasa ( Susanoo): Owns a small base immediately east of the player's starting base.
  • Oni Raiders ( Susanoo): Consists of various Onis and other Japanese military units that will try to escort a large group of Commoners to Shuten-Dōji's base. Stopping them will convert the Commoners to the player's colors.

Strategy[]

Don't try to take out Kagemasa's base right away, as that will trigger Shuten-Doji's hostility prematurely. Work on building up the economy, especially in the water, where the player can find plenty of fish. After a few minutes, Shuten-Doji and Kagemasa will agree on an alliance and the former will start attacking the player, changing the objective to destroying two of the Oni King's Castles. After this, take the opportunity to destroy Kagemasa's base and build a couple of Castles and some towers right outside the entrance to Shuten-Doji's base; it's the only ground route he'll take to reach the player.

Some time after this, a caravan of enemies guarding Commoners will appear in the north. Intercept it and save the Commoners to boost the player's economy, and then start looking to head down the northern passage to reach one of the Castles. Note that it'll take a while to get back to the player's own base from there if the enemy attacks while the player is away, so make sure to have enough static defenses ready first or have a large amount of cavalry.

For the Mythic Age, the player can choose Ōkuninushi if they plan to train a lot of Oyumi and Onmoraki, or Watatsumi if producing a lot of Shinobi, Onmyōji, and Shinigami. The latter minor god's Dragon Typhoon god power can also help in taking out enemy buildings. As the player already has Fūjin worshipped in the Heroic Age, Onis can be trained to help destroy enemy buildings more easily.

Using a navy to enter Shuten-Doji's base from the south can be done, but is not required. South of Kagemasa's base is a good spot on the shoreline to place a Castle to defend the fishing economy. Otherwise, just fight through the enemy and take out the second Castle to achieve victory.
