The Pope is an Industrial Age politician in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - Knights of the Mediterranean, available to the Italians and Maltese. As soon as the player advances to the Industrial Age by choosing him, books of 1,000 XP appear in the Home City shipment point (1,500 for the Italians if the Advanced Politicians Home City Card was sent).
Strategy[]
If the player still needs to get several shipments at the late game urgently, the Pope can be incredibly useful. The usefulness of the experience given will depend on how the Home City deck is built. In the Industrial Age, the experience can allow for the immediate shipping of the Factory card, which allows the Maltese and Italians to get their one Factory up and running as quickly as possible, temporarily reducing the advantage of other Europeans, who will need to either time to earn experience or keep shipments in reserve to build their two Factories.
If the Italians ship the Advanced Politicians Home City Card in the Exploration Age, the Pope can make a good trio with The Inventor (Commerce Age) and The Bishop (Fortress Age), as all three of them will give extra experience, coming to a total of 2,100 experience (providing slightly more than Mercantilism). The Pope is also an excellent bridge politician if the player is going for mercenaries and picked The Mercenary Contractor in the Fortress Age and follows up with The Mercenary Contractor again in the Imperial Age. Due to the experience given, he is also a great pick if going for any revolution.
Recommended shipments[]
The following recommendations focus on improving experience trickle for maximizing The Pope's usefulness. As mentioned previously, the experience given by The Pope is enough for immediately shipping an Industrial Age shipment such as the Factory.
Italians and Maltese[]
- Merchant Republics: Returns 25% of resources previously gained from Trade Routes; Trade routes generate 35% more resources, this includes experience.
Italians[]
- Advanced Politicians.
- Uffizi: Ships 1 Basilica Wagon and Lombards now trickle 0.2 XP for each invested resource; different resources do not stack the trickle.
- Statuto Albertino: Provides the Basilica with the Papacy technology. This technology increases Basilica build limit by +1. Basilicas have an experience trickle like Churches and other equivalent buildings.
- TEAM Pizza: Ships 100 food, 100 wood, 100 coin, 100 XP.
- Advanced Trading Post: Trading Posts get a ranged attack and +20% hit points, and cost -35%. Taking the trade route early is key for getting the most shipments possible.
Maltese[]
- Carmelite Churches: Ships 2 Church Wagons and increases Church build limit by 2.
Trivia[]
- The Pope's portrait is very similar to a Diego Velazquez's Portrait of Innocent X, although the politician lacks his facial hair and wears the papal tiara instead of a camauro.
