—Age of Empires IV description |
The Pit is a random map in Age of Empires IV whose main feature is a central valley flanked by cliffs in an otherwise open map, with long woodlines on each edge of the map.
Features[]
Aside from the cliffs and valley which divide the center of the map into three sections, this map also features two hills in the north and south corners. These hills are cornered by cliffs and must be accessed from the side. The other two corners always have a Trade Post. The three Sacred Sites on this map are distributed among the three sections of the map center - one in the central valley surrounded by Stealth Forest, and one on each side. Teams always spawn in a line or shallow arc on the northeast and southwest sides of the map, with a woodline at their back. While the standard five Relics seem to spawn in 1 vs 1, team games seem to consistently spawn fewer than normal, with six in 2 vs 2, and as few as seven observed in 4 vs 4 (where the standard is 11). This may be because of the limited range in which the Relics can spawn, only in the center section of the map and not on the corners.
Resources[]
The most unique resource feature on this map is the wood, which is all aggregated in rectangular forests on each edge of the map. While the back woodline appears safe, it is usually outside the range of the starting Town Center. Because of this, each player starts with an additional small woodline within range - the only other wood on the map besides the central Stealth Forest. Berry Bush and Huntable Boar spawns are standard, with berries tending to spawn closer to the players and Boars tending to spawn in the center sections. Deer spawns are separated between 1 large pack, which spawns in reasonably close proximity (but not in Town Center range) to each player, and several small packs, which spawn either just outside the corner hills or on the sides of the center area. Regarding the corner hills, the Large Stone Outcroppings are always evenly distributed between the hills with the Trade Posts, and half of the Large Gold Mines are evenly distributed between the other two hills along with an equal amount of Small Stone Outcroppings. The other half of the large mines are in the central valley. The rest of the contestable small mines also spawn outside the hills or on the center-sides, while the other contestable small outcroppings are limited to the center-sides.
