—Age of Empires IV description |
The Golden Gate is an economic landmark available to the Rus in Age of Empires IV in the Dark Age. It allows them to trade resources like a Market, but at a favorable rate.
Special ability[]
The Golden Gate starts off with one 'supply point' as soon as it is built, and gains one point every 50 seconds. For each supply point, the Golden Gate can be used to sell 100 food/wood/stone for 150 gold, or buy 150 food/wood/stone for 100 gold. These prices are fixed and do not change depending on activity at the Market (where normally prices change after any player exchanges resources). Therefore, the Golden Gate essentially generates 60 free resources per minute.
Strategy[]
The Golden Gate can provide a significant amount of flexibility in the early game, because it allows a Rus player to gather gold, and then pivot to whatever resource is needed for a particular strategy. This can be especially useful for a two Town Center build, where instead of having to build a second Mining Camp and gather stone using Villagers, the required amount of stone can simply be bought after two minutes. Selling wood (which the Rus will accumulate faster than most other civilizations) for gold can also be useful if access to a Gold Mine has been lost, but because stone starts out more expensive than other resources at a standard Market, it is typically the most efficient resource on which to use Golden Gate tickets. Although the 60 free resources per minute drastically falls off in significance as the game extends, supply points can be stockpiled over time and remain a useful tool to quickly get rid of a floating resource and rebalance an economy.
