Description[]

1568 - 1648

Waging war against the Habsburg Spanish and later the Portuguese, the newly established Dutch Republic became a major participant in overseas trading and territorial expansion. The war concluded with the Treaty of Münster, which officially recognized the Dutch as an independent nation.

Features[]

Objectives[]

  • The game starts with a timer. The defenders' team must defend the Command Post. The attackers' team must destroy the Command Post.

Starting conditions[]

The Defender must resist everyone else on a fortified peninsula defending the fort's Headquarters, the rest must attack! The trade route, command posts, and headquarters offer unique upgrades.

Command Posts, Headquarters, and Trading Posts[]

The defender begins with a Headquarters, a Town Center, and three Trading Posts already on the maritime trade route, ensuring the defender will enjoy a significant advantage in the number of shipments received. Each player on the attacking team receives a Command Post instead of a Town Center (which does not count towards the Town Center build limit). Two peninsulas on the edge of the map each contain an empty Trading Post site and a battery tower site (which can be occupied and built on by the defending player as well, even if it is closer to an enemy Town Center than is normally permitted).

  • Command Post and Headquarters: The Headquarters is the most important building in the scenario, as its survival (or destruction) is the victory condition for both teams. It has special technologies to aid the defending player and can receive Home City shipments. The Command Post can also receive Home City shipments and additionally acts as a Town Center, but can only research the Bank of Antwerp and Hire Zeeland Regiment technologies.
    • Abjuration (Commerce Age): Settlers gather and build 10% faster. Settler Hitpoints increased by 20%. 350 food, 350 coin
    • Bank of Antwerp (Commerce Age): Ships 1 Bank Wagon. Bank build limit increased by 1. 300 food, 250 wood
    • Ostend Defenses (Fortress Age): Building hitpoints increased by 20%. Battery Towers have 25% more attack and 5 more Line of Sight. 350 food, 350 coin
    • Hire Zeeland Regiment (Fortress Age): Ships 6 Ruyters. Gunpowder infantry and cavalry have 10% more attack. 200 food, 450 coin
    • Maurice of Nassau's Tactics (Fortress Age): Infantry have 10% more hitpoints and attack, and their build time is reduced by 20%. 250 wood, 175 coin
    • Prince of Orange (Industrial Age): Explorer hitpoints increased by 100%. Explorers now have an aura that boosts the hitpoints of nearby units. 500 food, 300 coin
  • Trading Posts: The Trading Posts begin upgraded to the second level, but lose the ability to begin a Trade Monopoly (likely because the defender already begins with 3 of the 5 Trading Posts under their control) and gain two new technologies.
    • Watergeuzen (Fortress Age): Warships have their build time reduced by 25% and move 15% faster. 300 food, 400 coin
    • Piet Heyn's Plunder (Industrial Age): Ships 300 coin, and an additional 500 for every other warship owned (up to a maximum of 3000 additional coin). 175 food, 175 wood

Victory conditions[]

Defend or destroy the fort's headquarters.

History[]

The Eighty Years' War (Dutch: Tachtigjarige Oorlog; Spanish: Guerra de los Ochenta Años) or Dutch War of Independence (1568–1648) was a revolt of the Seventeen Provinces of what are today the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg against Philip II of Spain, the sovereign of the Spanish Netherlands. After the initial stages, Philip II deployed his armies and regained control over most of the rebelling provinces. Under the leadership of the exiled William the Silent, the northern provinces continued their resistance. They eventually were able to oust the Habsburg armies, and in 1581 they established the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. The war continued in other areas, although the heartland of the republic was no longer threatened. This included the origins of the Dutch colonial empire, which began with Dutch attacks on Portugal's overseas territories. At the time, this was conceived as carrying the war with the Spanish Empire overseas, due to Portugal and Spain's being in a dynastic union, making the war one of the first global wars.

In 1609, the two sides agreed a Twelve Years' Truce; when it expired in 1621, fighting resumed as part of the broader Thirty Years' War. An end was reached in 1648 with the Peace of Münster (a treaty part of the Peace of Westphalia), when Spain recognised the Dutch Republic as an independent country. The Peace of Münster is sometimes considered the beginning of the Dutch Golden Age. Nevertheless, despite achieving independence, from the end of the war in 1648, there was considerable opposition to the Treaty of Münster within the States General of the Netherlands, since it allowed Spain to retain the Southern Provinces and permitted religious toleration for Catholics.
