Intro[]

Scenario description[]

Duped by the Mongols' provocative raids, the Hungarians chased down these new invaders… exactly as Batu Khan intended.

Opening cinematic[]

While the Mongols in the north destroyed the Polish army… Batu Khan and General Subutai rampaged through the south – into the heart of Hungary. Tricked into an intense pursuit, the Hungarian king chased down these foreign invaders… all the way to the plains of Mohi.

Luring the Hungarian army to carefully chosen battle site, Batu Khan and General Subutai prepared their warriors for another tactical fight.

Start of scenario[]

Batu Khan led his warriors across the plains, luring the Hungarian king to a battle site far from the safety of this city. As the Hungarians broke away to regroup across the Sajo river, the Mongols prepared to strike.

Scenario instructions[]

Starting conditions[]

Objectives[]

  • Destroy the Hungarian army
    • Scout the area across the bridge
    • Escape the ambush
    • Repair the broken bridge
    • Ready an army to flank the Hungarians
    • Batu Khan is waiting to attack
    • Attack across the bridge
    • Drive the Hungarians back to their camp
    • Force the camp defenders to rout

Players[]

  • General Subutai (Mongols): The player starts in the south of the map with a small group of Mangudai and Lancers, and is tasked with scouting the Hungarian position across the bridge to the north. After escaping the Hungarians' ambush, they must set up their base and prepare a force to drive off the Hungarians from their positions in tandem with Batu Khan's assault. Their final task will be to defeat the Hungarians in their camp by killing a sufficient number of their units before these can be replenished.

Allies[]

  • Batu Khan (Mongols): Batu Khan begins with a force of sixteen Lancers and Mangudai, as well as the Khan himself, who has high hit points making him very difficult to take down. Following the initial foray across the bridge and an eleven-minute timer, Batu Khan will continue attacking the Hungarian positions for the rest of the scenario, being continually reinforced by groups of Mangudai and Lancers from the south.

Neutral[]

  • Mohi (Holy Roman Empire): The neutral village of Mohi is located to the east of the player's starting position, across a ford. They can be raided for additional resources but otherwise play no role in the scenario.

Enemies[]

  • Hungarian Army (Kingdom of Hungary): The Hungarian army has a sizeable force positioned across the bridge to the north of the player's starting position, as well as additional troops in their camp at the northern end of the map and along the roads leading to it. Once their initial positions are overwhelmed, they will withdraw their forces northward and make a last stand in their camp. Their forces mostly consist of infantry, namely Men-at-Arms, Crossbowmen, and Veteran Spearmen, supported by Veteran Archers and Gilded Landsknechts, as well as a few Springalds. The camp garrison also includes a sizeable force of Knights, as well as a few Knights and Horsemen in the area across the bridge which will pursue the player's units after they scout the area. Although they do not have any military production buildings, the Hungarians will regularly spawn new units in their camp once on the defensive, and will also periodically send small groups of Veteran Spearmen to attack the player's base after their initial positions across the bridge are abandoned.

Strategy[]

Note: This strategy is intended for the Hard difficulty. Lower differences may differ slightly from what is described below.

This scenario plays similar to a Deathmatch, with the player beginning with large numbers of resources and tasked with overwhelming the enemy army. The player will be assisted by Batu Khan, who will lead frontal assaults against the Hungarian Army and will be continually reinforced by groups of Mangudai and Lancers from the south.

The first task will be to scout the area north of the bridge with the player's starting units. As soon as these reach the northern end of the bridge, the Hungarians will spring their ambush and send a force of Knights to attack the scouting party. In order to avoid losing their units, the player can send these back south to where Batu Khan and his forces are waiting, sending them back into the fight once the latter are engaged to avoid losses on Batu's part. The player will then receive additional Mangudai and Lancers under the command of General Subutai, as well as ten Villagers and a packed Town Center, Kurultai, Stable, Barracks, and Ger. They will then be tasked with preparing a force to flank the Hungarians before Batu Khan goes on the attack.

The player's initial position has every resources available, and the player should make sure to build as many military production buildings as they can fit near the Ovoo they place on the large Stone Mine in the southwest, as well as a Blacksmith and Arsenal to research improved versions of armor and attack upgrades for their units. There is also a neutral Trade Post to the west, across a broken bridge which can be repaired by the player's Villagers. Since the Hungarians do not attempt to attack the player's base during the first part of the scenario, and since any enemy attacks will only come from the north, the player can immediately begin trading without worrying about having to protect their Traders. Additional resources (but not stone) can also be gained by raiding the neutral Village of Mohi. With a base set up, the player can focus on massing units and positioning them to either side of the enemy forces across the river, in preparation for Batu's attack.

Since the Hungarians deploy mostly infantry, the focus should be on producing cavalry, namely Mangudai and Lancers, supported by Mangonels, which are highly effective at taking out the clumped masses of infantry that the player will encounter throughout the scenario. As the enemy army consists mostly of high-armored units, Horsemen will not be very effective here. When the timer ends, Batu will attack across the bridge with his forces, whereupon the player should rush in to flank the Hungarians from either side. The Hungarians have forces stationed in the Stealth Forests on either side of the bridge, as well as directly to the north, so the player may want to bring Scouts to locate these before their units are flanked.

If the initial assault fails, Batu will retreat southward and await reinforcements before attacking again. Since Batu will be continually reinforced by groups of Mangudai and Lancers, it is essentially impossible to lose the scenario, particularly since the Hungarians will make no attempt to attack the player's base until after their initial positions across the bridge are overwhelmed. Once the Hungarians are driven away from the river, the player, alongside Batu, will next have to clear out the units on the paths leading to the enemy camp. Batu will only advance so far on his own, however, as each group of reinforcements is too small to do much damage to the Hungarians on their own. While Batu favors the central path, the player can focus on eliminating the troops on the eastern path, in order to reach the camp first and stop the few enemy raids from the reaching the player's base. The Stealth Forest in the northeast is ideal for flanking the enemy archers and siege engines with melee cavalry, while the player's Mangudai draw out the enemy melee infantry from the front. However, in order to complete the scenario faster, the player may want to make sure to time their attacks to coincide with Batu's assaults, so as to gain the advantage of numbers.

Once the player reaches the enemy camp, they should first draw out as many defenders as they can with their Mangudai, and then have their siege engines take out the enemy Outposts and archers, while their Lancers defend these from enemy melee units. As always, the Mangudai's hit-and-run tactics are effective against the slow-moving enemy infantry, while General Subutai's Maneuver Arrow can be used to help do the same with the enemy Knights. Despite not having any military production buildings, the Hungarians will continually replenish the units their camp, so swift and decisive attacks with large groups of units are the key to completing the last phase of the scenario. Once enough of the enemy units are killed, the Hungarian Army will rout and the scenario will complete.

Achievement[]

Killing twice as many enemy units as Batu during the initial assault across the bridge grants the Forgot a Batu achievement.

Outro[]

End of scenario[]

The Mongols laid waste to the Hungarian fort sending their king and the last of his army fleeing for their lives. Once again, Batu Khan and General Subutai had outwitted and utterly destroyed their European enemies, striking terror into the heart of the west.

Post-game screen[]

The Mongols decimated the Hungarian army and sent their king fleeing for his capital. He would carry word of Batu Khan's ferocious warriors into Europe with him.

Page From History: General Subutai[]

During Genghis Khan's early reign, he appointed a young boy as his loyal door guard, seeing potential in his dedication. The boy remained at the khan's side and grew up learning his strategies. He would rise to become one of Genghis Khan's "Dogs of War", an elite group of his most accomplished generals. His name was Subutai.

War after war, Subutai demonstrated his shrewd ability to judge an enemy's weakness and exploit it. His unconventional methods led the Mongols to easy victories across Asia and into Europe.

He used spies, smokescreens and feigned retreats to confuse and exhaust his enemies. He coordinated sudden, multi-pronged assaults across vast distances with devastating results.

Subutai remains a legendary figure for both his brutality and his cunning.

Historical comparison[]

  • While the Hungarian army in the scenario is represented as being composed primarily of infantry, in real life, the Hungarians at Mohi deployed large numbers of light cavalry, which were supported by the heavy cavalry of the Knights Templar.
