Unique units prev aoe2de

Unique units are units exclusive to a single civilization in the Age of Empires series. They were first introduced in Age of Empires II, and are available to every game introduced since then. Hence, Age of Empires does not feature any unique units.

Age of Empires II[]

Main article: Unique unit (Age of Empires II)

Every civilization in Age of Empires II has at least one unique unit. The Vikings, Koreans, Spanish, Hindustanis, Incas, Italians, Berbers, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Tatars, Burgundians, Bohemians, Dravidians, and Romans have two unique units. The Gurjaras are the only civilization with three unique units.

Age of Mythology[]

The four civilizations in Age of Mythology each have a significant number of unique non-hero human units.

Unique units exclusive to individual major gods include:

Age of Empires III[]

Each European civilization in Age of Empires III features a number of unique units, usually similar in function to standard economic or military units common to most civilizations. In contrast, Native American, Asian and African armies consist of units almost entirely unique to their respective civilization.

Age of Empires IV[]

Every civilization in Age of Empires IV has at least one unique unit. The Holy Roman Empire have the fewest at two, while the Malians and Chinese have the most at six. Unique units in Age of Empires IV which replace regular units, like how the Ghazi Raider replaces the Delhi Sultanate Horseman, have slightly different roles and usually have abilities to better differentiate them from the regular units.

All units unique (both cosmetically and stats-wise) to a single civilization are listed below:

There are some units which may seem unique by name and appearance and being available to a single civilization, but have identical statistics and function to their regular counterparts in other civilizations, such as:

  • AoE4 Monk Imam (only available to the Abbasid Dynasty before the Season Three Update, now also available to Malians and Ottomans)
  • AoE4 Monk Shaman (only available to the Mongols)
  • Ships of the same type - Eg: Archer Ship Flavors such as Junk for the Chinese, Light Junk for the Mongols, Lodya Galley for the Rus, etc.
    • The War Cog, the Springald Ship of the French, has two bonuses and a different name, which may picture it as a unique unit.

Some non-unique units have unique upgrades or unique versions available only to a single civilization:
