Mongol Raiders was a single player limited-time event challenge scenario released with update 39284 of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. The player is challenged to take over a Mongol army and defeat all enemies by destroying a series of buildings before time runs out. The player receives a score based on the number of enemies defeated and the time left after doing so, that is then added to a leaderboard ranking. The scenario was withdrawn in update 40874, and was replaced by Barbarossa Brawl.

Scenario instructions[]

Starting conditions[]

Upon assuming command of the Mongol base:

Objectives[]

  • Bring Subotai (your hero) to his army (3, Green) to assume command of it.
  • Defeat at least one enemy.

The goal of the scenario is to obtain a high score by defeating all opponents as quickly as possible. You receive 4,000 bonus points for defeating each enemy and 100 bonus points for each year (5 seconds) remaining on the timer.

Hints[]

  1. Be aggressive! You have a very limited amount of time and receive more points for completing your objectives quickly!
  2. To defeat your enemies in this scenario, you only have to destroy their Monasteries, their Castles, or their Town Centers. Do not bother with the rest.
  3. If you defeat an enemy, you will capture their resources and buildings. Use these extra resources to fuel your attack on the next player.
  4. There are two paths to the Teuton Wonder. On each path lie different enemies with their own strengths and weaknesses. Make sure to use your own civilization's strengths to defeat each of them.
  5. Subotai's conquests are never finished! Try again to improve your score and challenge your friends!

Scouts[]

Your scouts report:

  • Genghis Khan has sent you, his most trusted general Subotai, to ride forth and bring other civilizations to their knees. Your advance party (3, Green) has established itself on the near bank of a river. Go to their camp to gain control of it.
  • The cunning Cumans (4, Yellow) control the far bank of the river and block your way further east. Their Kipchaks and Steppe Lancers defend their Castle. Destroy it quickly to gain access to your other enemies.
  • To the north are the treacherous Tatars (8, Orange). Their Keshiks, Steppe Lancers, and a few Cavalry Archers defend their walled city.
  • East of the Tatars are the shrewd Saracens (6, Purple). Beware! These desert dwellers have amassed an army of Heavy Camels, Mamelukes, and powerful Onagers - strong counters to your own Mongol forces!
  • To the south are the scornful Slavs (5, Cyan). They command Boyars, Champions, and a few Monks who may turn your own soldiers against you!
  • Next to the Slavs are the malicious Magyars (7, Grey). They protect the shallows with a fleet of Galleons and defend their Town Center with a horde of Magyar Huszars and Cavaliers. If you do not destroy them quickly, they will upgrade their Cavaliers to Paladins.
  • Finally, the terrible Teutons are entrenched on a cliff fortified with Keeps and Castles. Their Teutonic Knights and Paladins are fully upgraded but they, too, will fall before the might of the Mongol horde! Tear down their precious Wonder brick by brick to show them your power!
  • Genghis Khan expects you to conquer all of these enemies quickly, so do not delay!

Players[]

  • The Player (CivIcon-Mongols Mongols) begins on the northwestern corner with only one hero unit, Subotai.

Ally[]

  • The Mongols (CivIcon-Mongols Mongols) occupy the northwest with abundant resources, troops, Villagers, and buildings. When Subotai reaches the flag next to their Castle, they surrender control to the Player.

Enemies[]

  • The Teutons (CivIcon-Teutons Teutons) occupy the southeastern corner and are the most formidable enemy. The player must destroy their Wonder.
  • The Cumans (CivIcon-Cumans Cumans) are just across the river from the Mongols and are the weakest enemy. The player must destroy their Castle to take over their buildings and resources.
  • The Slavs (CivIcon-Slavs Slavs) occupy the southwest. The player must destroy their Monastery.
  • The Saracens (CivIcon-Saracens Saracens) have a walled town to the east. The player must destroy their Castle.
  • The Magyars (CivIcon-Magyars Magyars) occupy the south. The player must destroy their Town Center.
  • The Tatars (CivIcon-Tatars Tatars) have a walled town in the northeast. The player must destroy their Castle.

Strategy[]

In this scenario, the player is challenged to defeat all enemies before the timer runs out. This is done by destroying only one flagged building in each enemy base, upon which the enemy's units disappear and most buildings and resources are turned to the player's control. For this reason the player must concentrate on taking down the one building and avoid others unless strictly necessary.

To take over the Mongol army, Subotai must walk near each blue flag or the triggers won't launch. Almost as soon as the base is gained, the Castle will be attacked by the Cumans from the east and south, who are just across the river. Garrison and upgrade the two Capped Rams to Siege Rams and send them to the Cuman Castle east, while the starting units take care of the Cuman forces and their garrisoned Capped Ram right next to their Castle, in particular. At the same time start spamming Trebuchets and use them against the Cuman Castle as soon as they come out.

After the Cumans' defeat, train at least ten Villagers and put them to mine gold. Stone isn't needed for the scenario so reassign the stone miners to gold as well. Research Heavy Cavalry Archer, Parthian Tactics, and all Blacksmith technologies, and start massing cavalry archers from the starting Mongol and captured Cuman Archery Ranges (not Mangudai, as they are trained slower from the Castle and interfere with the production of Trebuchets). Most enemies train melee units only so they can be taken out by micromanaged massed cavalry archers before they can cause casualties.

Go south and defeat the first Slavic patrol. This is a strategic spot from where to launch the attacks on the Slavs and Saracens later. Send all siege weapons against the Slavic Monastery, using the cavalry archers to kill any Slavic units coming after them. Ignore their towers, they aren't powerful. After the Slavs' defeat, start building five Fast Fire Ships and five or six Cannon Galleons in each of their two Docks, but keep them garrisoned until completion. Meanwhile, head north until meeting the first Saracen tower, destroy it with Trebuchets and use the cavalry archers to kill the Heavy Camel Riders and Mamelukes guarding it. Be careful not to move too far to the north so as not to trigger the Tatars' attack. Place the Trebuchets on the spot of the Tower and attack the Castle. This will lure out a vast Saracen army to meet the Trebuchets, so be ready to kill most with cavalry archers before they reach them. Separate the starting Mangudai and use them against the Saracens' Siege Onagers. This will also fulfill one of the mini-challenges of the map.

Ungarrison the ships. Use the Fire Ships against the Magyar Galleons and the Cannon Galleons against the Magyar tower on the island, then all against the Magyar Town Center. Although the river is almost entirely shallow, the Magyar army won't attack the ships. After the Magyars' defeat, move the Cannon Galleons to the end of the river east and use them to destroy the first two Teuton Keeps. Start building Siege Rams in the nearest Magyar Siege Workshops but keep them garrisoned inside the Workshops.

Meanwhile, move the army between the Tatar and Saracen bases, trying to drag as little Tatar forces as possible. Destroy the Castle from the south with Trebuchets and kill any coming soldiers with cavalry archers. After the Tatars' defeat, move south through the Saracen base and then along the path to the limits of the Magyar base. Unpack the Trebuchets and attack the western Teuton Castle, then rain arrows on the Paladins and Teutonic Knights coming out. When the Teutons seem thinned enough, release the Siege Rams and send them against the Wonder, with the cavalry archers (as there are still many Teutonic Knights around the Wonder), and then the Trebuchets after them.

Trivia[]

  • The in-game files term this as an "event" scenario.
  • This scenario is modified from a sample scenario used to promote the Definitive Edition before its release. The environment, civilizations, and units have been changed to resemble the Mongol conquests of western Asia and eastern Europe. In the original the player begins with Belisarius and takes over an army of Byzantines.
  • Update 40874 replaced the scenario with Barbarossa Brawl; however, it was stated that there will be a place for all the scenarios and leaderboards in a future update.
  • Currently, this event scenario and the sample scenario can be accessed with the Scenario Editor, by copying their files from the campaign folder (namely the 0_E3_Scenario and dcam0) into the editor campaign and scenario folders.
  • As part of the event Mongol Conquest, the player can also unlock a couple of special icons by earning more than 15,000 and 20,000 points in this scenario. However the player must also have completed a game in Land Nomad mode, and destroyed a Siege Onager using Mangudai beforehand, respectively.
  • Subotai does not need to survive to complete the scenario. In fact, his death won't be acknowledged at all.
  • This is the only scenario where Subotai uses the color blue instead of orange.
  • For an unknown reason, the Magyar Paladins have 20 attack.
