Target a location to create a temporary swamp infested with Kappa that will leap out of the water and drown enemy human soldiers.
—In-game description

Swampland is a Japanese god power in Age of Mythology: Retold - Heavenly Spear that is available to worshipers of Inari Ōkami in the Classical Age. When invoked, it creates a temporary swampland at the target location. The swampland is inhabited by Kappa (turtle-frog demons) who randomly pop out of the murk to drag down and drown enemy soldiers.

Effects[]

Creates a temporary swampland in the target area. Enemy human soldiers (as well as Oracles) in this area have a chance to be dragged down and killed by the Kappa inhabiting it. These Kappa are not selectable units, and cannot be targeted or ordered to move or attack, but instead appear at random from beneath the surface of the swamp to take out enemy units. Heroes, myth units, worker units, and Caravans are not attacked by the Kappa. The swampland, along with the Kappa, will disappear after 30 seconds.

  • In a circle of radius 18, Kappa numbering approximately 10 to 12 are spawned. The Kappa are visible to all players.
  • Once every 6 seconds, each Kappa can capture the nearest enemy human soldier within a range of 2, making it vanish (such that on-death effects like Tiger Cavalry respawn do not occur).
  • After drowning the target, the Kappa re-emerges at the same spot. For the god power's duration, each Kappa can make up to four units vanish this way.

Further statistics[]

God bonuses[]

  • Susanoo: Reuse cost reduced by 25% with each other god power invoked.

Tactics[]

Swampland functions as a crowd control god power, capable of wearing down armies of human soldiers. Slow-moving units like War Elephants are especially vulnerable, while faster ones like Camel Riders and Shinobi can escape the swamp to avoid getting killed by the Kappa. Swampland can be used both offensively, when attacking an enemy's base to wipe out any defenders, and defensively, when repelling an enemy raid to protect worker units.

Swampland's potential can be maximized with the Kusanagi and Thunder Burst god powers, which stun all enemy units in the area and keeps them in the area for longer, thus allowing more enemy human soldiers to be drowned by the Kappa. Preferably, they should be invoked after Swampland, as Thunder Burst creates a local god power shield in the area it is invoked in and thus will prevent the player from invoking their own god powers in the area as well.

Mythology[]

Inari Ōkami's God Power, Swampland, floods an area, creating a temporary, primordial marsh. This swamp is not just difficult terrain - it is a predator's lair.

Kappa lie hidden beneath the murky water. When an enemy soldier strays too close, a Kappa will erupt from the swamp to drag the unfortunate victim to a watery grave. Each Kappa can strike multiple times, so the only way to escape the slaughter is to retreat from the cursed ground. This makes the swamp a lethal trap for unwary armies.

Trivia[]

  • It can be used on water, even though it does not affect ships or myth units.
  • Human soldiers being grabbed and drowned by Kappa make the same screaming sounds as when they are dragged and killed by the Spiders from the Spider Lair god power.
  • The Kappa cannot be targeted or damaged by any means, but they can be affected by certain effects like knockback from Meteor, stealth mode from Vanish, stun from Li Jing's ability, etc.
  • While Swampland is active, lines of vertical green writing can be seen floating over the water. The writing resembles man'yogana, which is a system of archaic Chinese characters used to transcribe medieval Japanese.
