The Sudanese Dervish is a melee Skirmisher capable of attacking enemies at distance. Its attack speed becomes faster when foes come near. It is preferable to engage enemies up close rather than dealing with them from far away. It is effective against heavy infantry and light cavalry.
Ranged infantry get +10% damage; French and Hausa-only ranged infantry get +15% damage instead

Although it is not listed in the patch notes, with update 13.18214, Sudanese Dervishes have a ×1.5 multiplier against heavy infantry and a ×0.5 multiplier against light infantry and counter-skirmishers.
With update 13.58326, Sudanese Dervishes have a ×3.0 multiplier against heavy infantry, ×0.5 against infantry, ×0.5 against heavy cavalry, and ×0.4 against hand shock infantry. Light cavalry, ranged shock infantry, light infantry, and counter-skirmishers multipliers were removed.
With update 14.43676, Sudanese Dervishes have a ×0.5 multiplier against hand shock infantry.
With update 15.59076, Sudanese Dervish damage, range and ranged resistance reduced to 9 (from 14), 13 (from 14) and 15% (from 20%); removed the 0.5x damage multipliers against infantry, artillery and villagers; ranged damage multiplier against heavy infantry reduced to 2.5x (from 3x); speed increased from 4.5 to 5.
Dervish was a name given to members of the Mahdist movement, an Islamic ascetic sect. Known for their piety, white robes with colored rectangles, and whirling dance, Dervishes could be as powerful on the battlefield as they were spiritual.
