This article is about the building in Age of Empires IV. For the building in other games of the series, see Stone Wall.

Sturdy wall that cannot be attacked by torches. Units on walls take 25% less damage from ranged attacks and their range is increased by +1.
Age of Empires IV description

The Stone Wall is a wall in Age of Empires IV available starting in the Feudal Age available to all civilizations except for the Mongols and the Rus (unless the Spasskaya Tower is built). It is a sturdy wall on which infantry can climb to gain bonuses, and that cannot be attacked by torches or non-siege units.

Game mechanics[]

Infantry can climb onto allied walls using a Stone Wall Gate or Tower, or if a piece of the wall has been destroyed. Enemy infantry can also get on top of Stone Walls using Siege Towers, although they cannot use Gates or Towers to get down, and must use either the Siege Tower or a destroyed segment of wall. Infantry on walls take 25% less damage from ranged attacks, 50% less damage from siege attacks, and their range is increased by 1.

Stone Walls cannot be targeted by most units that use ranged or torch attacks. They are vulnerable only to siege attacks from siege engines and elephants. When a Stone Wall is destroyed, the two adjacent segments of Stone Wall will also be destroyed.

Stone Walls can be connected to any other allied walls (including Palisade Walls) as well as to resources. All static resources can be used as part of a wall. Building a wall across a Gold Mine, Stone Mine, Berries, or Trees, will completely block navigation so that the resource acts as part of the wall. Gap fillers (small walls that extend from wall end pieces) are built automatically to help clearly show what is and is not walled off. However, Stone Walls cannot be connected directly to other buildings, meaning that they must completely surround a building to block access to units. At any time before a Stone Wall segment is complete, the blueprint can be converted into a Stone Wall Gate for 35 stone (if a gate could normally be placed there).

Except for those of the Knights Templar, Stone Walls do not interact with influence areas, so they are not affected by any bonuses that may affect other buildings within the area.

Projectile[]

The Knights Templar can add arrowslit emplacements to their Stone Walls through their Fortress and Templar Headquarter influence. It is a slightly weaker version of the standard Arrowslits emplacement with greater range.

Changelog[]

  • Originally, Stone Walls could be built in 8 seconds. With patch 11963, they take 16 seconds to build.
  • With Patch 14681, Stone Walls under construction can now be attacked by all units.
  • Originally, the Rus could not build Stone Walls at all. With the Season Two Update 17718, the Spasskaya Tower landmark now unlocks the building of Stone Walls.
  • Originally, Stone buildings cost wood to repair. With the Season Two Update, they cost Stone to repair.
  • Originally, construction began at 10%. With the Season Two Update, it begins at 1%.
  • Originally, Stone Walls cost 15 stone. With Server-Side Patch 5.1.148.1, they cost 20 stone. With update 12.0.1974, they cost 25 stone
  • Originally, Stone Walls had 3,500 hit points. With update 6.0.878, they have 3,000 hit points.
  • Originally, Stone Walls could not be connected to static resources, allied walls, or Palisade Walls. This was changed with the Wall rework in update 9.1.176.
  • Originally, Stone Wall segments could only be destroyed one at a time. With the Wall rework in Update 9.1.176, destroying one segment causes adjacent segments to also be destroyed.
  • Originally, units on top of walls took -66% damage. With the Wall rework in Update 9.1.176, this was changed to -25% for ranged attacks, and -50% for siege attacks.
  • With update 10.0.576, the ability to convert a wall blueprint into a gate was added. Originally, this cost 30 stone. With an unknown update, it costs 35 stone.
  • Originally, ranged infantry on top of Stone Walls had +2 range. With update 12.0.1974, they have +1 range.

Campaign version[]

Because the campaigns do not get rebalanced with each update, Stone Walls maintain the same stats in each campaign that they had upon the campaign's release. Therefore, in the original four campaigns:

  • They cost only 10 stone and take 8 seconds to build.
  • They have only 2,500 hit points.
  • They have 30 fire armor, although this is meaningless because they cannot be attacked by units wielding torches.

In the The Sultans Ascend campaign:

  • They cost 20 stone per segment
  • Ranged infantry on top of Stone Walls gain +2 range

The one exception in both cases is the Wall Defense enhancement, which has been changed in the campaigns to match its current version.
