Sends a squadron of 9 Counter Dragoons (Dragoons) from the motherland. Replaces all Cavalry Archer shipments in your Homecity with Counter Dragoons.
—In-game description

St. Petersburg Dragoons (Kalmucks before update 14.43676) is a technology in Age of Empires III that is unique to the Russians and can be researched at the Church once the Fortress Age is reached and the "Reformist Tsar" Home City Card has been sent. Once researched, 9 Guard Dragoons with 1.2x bonus damage against light ranged cavalry named Counter Dragoons will appear in the Home City shipment point and Home City Cards that ship Cavalry Archers now ship Counter Dragoons instead.

St. Petersburg Dragoons is the only way for the Russians to acquire Dragoons.

This technology also has an additional effect that increases the hit points and damage of Counter Dragoons by 20% after sending the "Landed Gentry" card, also changing its visual appearance and name to "Dragoon Combat". However, the effect of the "Landed Gentry" card still remains.

Changelog[]

Age of Empires III[]

  • The technology is named Kalmucks.

Knights of the Mediterranean[]

  • With update 14.43676, the technology is named St. Petersburg Dragoons, the unit names were changed from Kalmucks to Counter Dragoons, they get an extra ×1.2 multiplier against light cavalry, and replaces Cavalry Archers from Home City shipments with Counter Dragoons.

Trivia[]

  • The original technology name may be a reference to the Kalmyk people's skilled use of firearms while on horseback.
  • Before update 14.43676, the Russian Expeditionary Army, available for the Chinese in The Asian Dynasties through the Consulate by allying with the Russians, included 7 Kalmucks. Unlike the Russian version, however, the Consulate version was automatically upgraded in every Age.
  • Due to a bug, Russian Kalmucks are silent while Consulate Kalmucks aren't. This has been fixed in the Definitive Edition.
