The Sloop is a military ship in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition that is exclusive to the United States and Mexicans. It replaces the Caravel and can be trained at the Dock once the Commerce Age is reached.

Overview

Like the Caravel, the Sloop is a light scout craft that can be used for scouting, fishing, and supporting heavier ships. Like most ships, the Sloop can also be used to transport units, up to 50 from one location to another. It is more fragile than the Caravel, but possesses faster movement and a stronger attack, along with a charged ability.

The Sloop is faster than the Caravel, but is beaten by the Ottoman Galley. This makes them effective for scouting and transporting military units. Because of their lower hit points, Sloops should not be individually sent to naval combat against enemy ships, especially Frigates, which can rip them apart in a matter of seconds. Thus, it is strongly advised to have them supported by other ships and to research technological improvements from the Dock as soon as possible in order to increase their efficiency.

Special ability

• Broadside Attack (automatically activated when attacking with a cooldown of 60 seconds): Fires a volley of shots at an enemy ship or artillery within attack range 20, with doing 34×3 siege damage and 1 Area of Effect with a ×2.0 multiplier against ships.

History

“

During the American Revolution and the following years, the young nation faced a vast problem: it had no navy, leaving it vulnerable to sea blockades, bombardment, and piracy. Small war vessels like sloops and their cousins, cutters and schooners, formed a key part of the American navy during its early years. Vessels such as the USS Hannah, the Franklin, the Warren, the Hancock, and the Lee used their superior mobility to even the odds against formidable opponents, and still hold an esteemed place in the nautical lore of the northeast United States.
