History[]
“ | Sky lanterns, also known as Kongming lanterns, are ancient Chinese paper lanterns. According to legend, they were invented by the renowned military strategist Zhuge Liang, also known as Kongming. It is said he used them as distress signals when surrounded by enemies, which is why they are also called Kongming lanterns. In addition to distress signals, lanterns are also utilized for making wishes and transmitting messages. In some legends, people even made large sky lanterns to illuminate the path for armies at night. When Zhuge Liang, fought at the Battle of Red Cliffs (Chi Bi), he harnessed the power of the east wind to help set the warlord Cao Cao’s fleet ablaze. |

Trivia[]
- This technology reflects the risks of sky lanterns, as they can cause fires when they land improperly (to the point of starting wildfires). Many countries restrict the use of sky lanterns because of this.
