Ships in Age of Empires III are units which can move (sail) on water. Ships are used for fishing, combat, and to transport land units across bodies of water.
Using the cheat code "flying dutchman" in the Definitive Edition will allow ships to travel on land.

Recruiting ship[]
War ships which can train units near the shore are called recruiting ships. They receive less damage from Culverins, and are also siege units, so they suffer less from defensive structures too. This tag was introduced in update 15.59076.
