Sherwood Heroes is a custom map in Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings.
Description[]
Sherwood Heroes is a map with flat terrain and inundated with haphazardly scattered trees with tiny groves of trees dotting throughout. There are also some small lakes full of Shore Fish and deep fish, but few huntable animals. Besides the starting area of each player, resources are scattered widely, but the distribution still resembles a dense forest.
Relics here are standard, but herdable animals are few and far between. There are also a greater number of Wolves to contend with than normal. Besides a scout unit, each player starts with Robin Hood and Friar Tuck heroes.
Viable tactics[]
As the wood is scattered throughout the map, it is difficult to expand one's territory and construct buildings with all of the trees in the way. For food, there isn't much to offer aside from the ponds full of fish and the occasional Boar. Farms are workable thanks to the abundant wood, but it is the making room for those farms that poses the greatest annoyance. Alternatively, one could invest in Docks for Fish Trap economies โ in fact, being that the ponds are so small, it's one of the times in a game that a naval Fish Trap economy is as easily defensibly as a Farm economy is.
Being that there is a mere bump or two in the otherwise flattened map, it's not as useful to build Castles or towers to hold territory as it is to build Town Centers, which then also double as better options for gathering the wood and other resources on the map. Hence, civilizations with great focus on their Town Centers (like the Britons and Persians) will be at home here. Other civilizations in need of a naval economy (like the Italians, Malay, and Persians) will make finding the ponds a high priority, since their small size makes it much easier to defend Fishing Ships and Fish Traps. Raiding civilizations like the Magyars, Goths, and Lithuanians will appreciate the relative ease of movement through the cluttered map. The Celts in particular benefit as a quick raiding civilization, combined with their wood chopping bonuses and their powerful Siege Workshop units that can clear through any trees in the way.
