This section is most likely incomplete and may need expansion. You can help by adding to it.

As soon as the game starts, a random myth unit is selected from the next Age to be spawned by Shennong's Gift of Beasts god blessing. This unit is any myth unit which is normally trainable at the Temple for any Chinese major god, even if the player did not Age up with them or even if they are granted only by a minor god that Shennong does not have access to. Once chosen, their resource cost is transformed into Reward Points using the formula:

Gift of Beasts popup AoMR

Where,

Reward Points needed to spawn the randomly selected myth unit
Food cost of the myth unit
Wood cost of the myth unit
Gold cost of the myth unit
Favor cost of the myth unit

Since the moment the myth unit was chosen, as the player generates favor, the same amount of Reward Points from the formula above is reduced. Once it reaches zero, the myth unit is spawned at the player's Temple for free. The unit is spawned even if the player does not have population headroom left. Once a unit is spawned, the game then randomly chooses the next myth unit to be spawned. This way, the player can gain access to Classical Age myth units in the Archaic Age, etc. In the Heroic, Mythic, and Wonder Ages, the Mythic Age myth units are chosen. Hovering over the Gift of Beasts icon on the right side of the god power toolbar shows the next myth unit and Reward Points left to spawn it.

If the player does not have a Temple, the Reward Points of the chosen myth unit are reduced till they reach 1, then the mechanism pauses. Once a Temple is built, the unit spawns and the next unit is chosen. Thus, any favor earned between the time when the Reward Point reached 1 and when the Temple was constructed does not contribute to the Reward Point deduction of the next unit.

Mythology[]

Shennong is also known as the 'Divine Farmer' or the 'Divine Husbandman.' He taught humans agriculture, invented agricultural tools, discovered the uses of medicinal herbs and tea, and contributed to the domestication of plants and animals.

Shennong is often depicted chewing on herbs to discover their medicinal properties. According to legend, Shennong died from tasting plants to uncover their effects. Because he made this sacrifice for humanity, he earned great respect around the world.

Trivia[]

  • Shennong is also known as the Yan Emperor (炎帝) or Yandi, meaning "Flame Emperor," due to his association with fire and his legendary role in early Chinese civilization.
  • In his artwork, Shennong holds a yellow flower herb, which is possibly the same one which caused his death as described in his mythology.
