The Sentinel replaces the Musketeer and is unique to the Maltese. It is available starting in the Commerce Age and is adept on defense, gaining strength when positioned near buildings owned by the same player. It has better hit points and armor than standard Musketeers at the cost of two population slots as well as lower speed and range. When engaged by melee units, it will switch to a polearm.

Overview[]
The Sentinel is a defensive Musketeer that may construct Outposts. It is stronger near buildings, receiving a +7.5% bonus to hit points and damage near allied buildings. Frontier fortifications and Town Centers instead give a +15% bonus.
This bonus will also be received from enemy buildings after Crusader Knights is researched.
With the "Fort Construction" Home City Card, Sentinels can build Forts, but a rate 3 times slower. Construction speed increases by 100% with advancing to the Industrial and Imperial Age. So 8 Sentinels take 57 seconds to build a Fort in the Commerce and Fortress Age, 29 seconds in the Industrial Age, and 19 seconds in the Imperial Age.
Special abilities[]
Defender aura: +7.5% damage and hit points bonus when near allied buildings (also enemy buildings when Crusader Knights is researched) within 34 range. Doubled effect when near buildings with attacks.
Battle Bluster (automatically activated when attacking with a cooldown of 30 seconds; requires the "Flintlock Rockets" Home City Card): The Sentinel fires a Rocket, which deals 18.4 damage (0.25x bonus damage against artillery) with an Area of Effect of 1 from a range of 14.
Health Regeneration: Regenerates hitpoints when idle (0.25% per second after 3.5 seconds idle).
Originally, Sentinels had 150 hit points, 12 range, 15 siege damage, and a ×2.0 melee multiplier against cavalry. With update 14.3853, they have 155 hit points, 13 range, 18 siege damage, and a ×2.5 melee multiplier against cavalry.
Trivia[]
In melee combat, the Sentinel and the Veteran Sentinel model uses a bill, while the Guard and Imperial Sentinel model uses a halberd.
The Sentinel is one of four units that fight with a halberd in melee, the others being the Halberdier, Papal Guard, and Trabant.
Additionally, the Sentinel is one of five ranged infantry units that fight with a polearm in melee, the others being the Ashigaru Musketeer (since the Definitive Edition), Iron Troop, Pavisier, and Azap (who also uses a halberd).
Their construction skill is similar to the Sicilianunique unitSerjeant in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Lords of the West, as both can build fortications in the second age.
Unlike other Musketeers (except the Soldado), they take 2 population, so it is advisable to choose the Fort Construction card to build early Forts in the middle of the map in the Commerce Age to raze and rush enemy economies.
History[]
“
Owing to their position on the frontier against a powerful adversary in the Ottoman Empire, the Knights of Malta were often forced to adopt primarily defensive tactics. Their troops were expert at defensive operations and well-equipped for such tasks – most notably, in 1565, a small Maltese defense force commanded by the Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette repelled a vastly numerically superior Ottoman force at the Siege of Malta. The early modern period saw the introduction of more advanced firearms into armies, but for centuries soldiers still retained the melee weapons of the prior era, which remained reliable and trusty when in a pinch.
