In a standard game, the player starts off with a Scout Cavalry. It has a weaker attack and is slower in the Archaic Age, but receives stat buffs instantly upon reaching the Civic Age. The starting Scout Cavalry starts in the Stand Ground unit stance.
The Scout Cavalry also cannot attack timid huntables like Deer. They also have the Auto Scout ability.
The Scout Cavalry reuses the spatha sword from the Huskarl and wears a Roman tunic and a gladius scabbard. Additionally, the Light Cavalry wears a Montefortino helmet, lorica hamataepomydes shoulder pads and a shield. The Raider reuses the helmet from the Huskarl and additionaly wears vambraces, greaves, and a small scaled horse barding. Overall, the units appear to be based on Roman Republican equites cavalry units.
