—Age of Empires IV description |
The Scholar is a religious unit in Age of Empires IV that is unique to the Delhi Sultanate and available at the Mosque starting in the Dark Age. The Scholar has no combat ability, but can pick up Relics (from the Castle Age onward), convert enemy units, heal friendly units, and capture Sacred Sites starting in the Castle Age, or in the Feudal Age after researching Sanctity. A single Scholar is produced for free at the first Dock or Mosque built.
Ability[]
- Heal (Passive/Active): Heals friendly units at 7 hit points per second up to full health from a distance of one tile. This can be targeted by right-clicking on a unit, or the nearest unit within a 5 tile radius will automatically be healed. Targets in combat are healed 50% slower.
- Toggle Automatic Healing (Toggled): Toggle automatic healing on or off.
- Drop Relic: Drop a held Relic at a particular location. This can only be used to drop-off a Relic on the map, not in a building such as a Monastery, which must be right clicked while holding the Relic.
- Conversion (Active): While carrying a Relic, attempts to convert all units within a 4.75 tile radius to its side. Any enemy units remaining within the radius at the end of a 6 second countdown are converted. Siege engines, hero units, and other religious units are not affected. Has a 120 second cooldown.
- Scholar Research (Passive): Scholars garrisoned inside Mosques, Madrasas, or Docks can increase the speed of technologies at buildings within the Scholar influence area, scaling with the number of Scholars garrisoned.
- Zeal (Passive/Active): Units healed by a Scholar gain +50% attack speed for 3 seconds after researching the Zeal technology.
- Garrisoned Scholar (Passive): Scholars can garrison inside military production buildings, boosting production by 100% after Efficient Production is researched. Up to four Scholars can also garrison inside a Dock, each improving the work rate of the Dock by 20%.

Research speed[]
The Delhi Sultanate can research technologies for free, but at a slower rate. By garrisoning Scholars inside their Mosques, Madrasas or Docks, the research speed can be increased.
The following table shows the research speed of any Imperial Age University technology in function of numbers of Scholars garrisoned.
- The original research time seconds
- Each garrisoned Scholar decreases the research time until 53 Scholars.
- The minimal research time is seconds, or 1/15 of original research time.
In terms of percentage:
- The first Scholar helps reduce the research time by about 18%.
- Together with the second Scholar, the research time is reduced by about 28%.
- Up to 5 Scholars, the research time decreases by about 10% per added Scholars but the effect is less and less significant.
- The relationship is not completely ratio-based.
However, if shifting the research time by the minimal research time, 72 seconds, (or 1/15 of original research time 1,080 seconds), notice a quasi-multiplicative relationship between the consecutive terms, with a ratio close to somewhere between 0.8777 and 0.8779, due to the UI showing only integer research time.
The hypothesized formula is: , where T is the original research time 1,080 seconds, where r can be any number between 0.878073 and 0.878096.
By rounding down the Theoretical research time, it matches the In-game UI research time, that is: .
Number of Scholars | In-game research time |
% of original research time | In-game shifted research time |

Changelog[]
- Originally, all Scholars moved at 1 tiles/s speed. With Server-Side Patch 12973, Scholars without Relics move at 1.12 tiles/s, whereas those with Relics move 25% slower.
- Originally, Scholars took 45 seconds to train. With Season Two Update 17718, they take 30 seconds to train.
- Originally, Scholars cost 150 gold. With update 6.0.878, they cost 130 gold.
- With update 6.0.878, religious units now only heal at 50% speed when their target is in combat.
- Originally, Manuscript Trade had to be researched in order for garrisoned Scholars to increase the work rate of Docks and global research speed. With update 11.0.782, this was reworked into a civilization bonus.
Trivia[]
- The Scholar, like the Imam, carries a crosier, a stylized staff that is a symbol of the governing office of a bishop or Apostle and is carried by high-ranking prelates of various Christian churches, but it is not used by Muslims or secular scholars.
