Template:AoEUnitsSavaran is a Cataphract hero unit featured in the Bukhara campaign game in Age of Empires II HD: The Forgotten. They are also available in the Scenario Editor.
Savarans are practically backbone Sasanian soldiers, but they are technically listed as 'heroes' to enable the hitpoint regeneration. In the Bukhara campaign, once the player discovers the small camp at the outskirt of the Persian lands, the player can start buying 10 Savarans each time by clicking on the main pavilion and paying 1500 gold.
Their base design is the Cataphract or Elite Cataphract, but they have a higher HP and better attack, while keeping the armor and pierce armor the same. Their main advantage besides their attack is their regeneration of HP which made them to be listed as 'heroes'; because of this, they make excellent shock troops in the Bukhara campaign, capable of distracting enemies while other troops drop for the kill.
Historical Information
The Sasanian Empire (or Sassanid) which lasted from 224 AD to 651 AD, has a class of aristocrats called wuzurgan that formed the military backbone of the Sassanid Army, the Savaran or Aswaran; these aristocrats would answer to high ranking officers of the Aswaran corps and the Shah. The use of the Cataphract design in-game is reflected historically as Aswaran ranged from foot archers to heavy cavalry to even war elephants, and most were cavalry men; Aswarans are also highly skilled in one-on-one combat, were unrivaled archers and all members of the Aswaran wore mail armor, including their steeds. As they are aristocrats, it is assumed that Aswarans were precursors of the medieval Knights in Western and Central Europe in the Middle Ages.
