Puru unique Heavy Elephant that resists bonus damage and conversion, but requires two population space.
—In-game description

The Sannāhya is a Classical Age elephant cavalry unit in Chronicles: Alexander the Great available at the Stable to the Puru. It can be upgraded to the Elite Sannāhya in the Imperial Age.

Ability[]

The Sannāhya has a number of abilities/quirks which make it very different from melee elephants in Age of Empires II:

  • Conversion resistance: Its minimum and maximum conversion intervals are increased by +4. This effect is identical to that of First Crusade, and stronger than the Bengali bonus.
  • Bonus damage resistance: Incoming bonus damage is reduced by 50%. This is again more than the Bengali and Sicilian bonuses of 25% for elephants and 40% for human soldiers.
  • Trample damage: It has a blast radius of 0.5 (which can be increased to 0.65 with Vadhāvadha), which deals 6 (+1 each with Vadhāvadha and the Elite upgrade) damage.
  • Population cost: Its efficiency is balanced by the double population slots it occupies, instead of just being costlier.

Tactics[]

This section is most likely incomplete and may need expansion. You can help by adding to it.

The unit can be massed relatively easily due to being from the Stable, and its attributes allow it to crush any non-counter melee units, draw away enemy ranged attacks, and also be a soft counter to buildings. As the Puru are also an archer civilization, this unit can be supported by any archer unit of choice which can shoot down enemy Spearmen and Priestesses, or discourage mounted archers attempting hit-and-run.

Masses of Scorpions with a few Onagers can be used to counter Sannāhyas and most other Puru units, as the Puru lack Onagers themselves, or any other anti-siege siege units.

Alexander's Sannāhya[]

Alexander's Sannāhya is a special version of the unit available in the Alexander the Great campaign in Chronicles: Alexander the Great. It can be trained at the Macedonian Command Post if chosen over Alexander's Longbowman in No Escape. Its attributes are identical to those of the Sannāhya, except for its longer training time of 42 seconds and for having an attack bonus against all buildings instead of standard buildings. It is hidden in the Scenario Editor.

It receives the Elite Sannāhya upgrade automatically for free when advancing to the Imperial Age.

Trivia[]

  • The armor of Sannāhya is similar to a Ptolemaic battle elephant figurine by Russian Vityaz.[1] The symbol on the caparison and head armor is based on reconstructions of Mauryan shields.[2] The crew, their lances, and the round black shields resemble an illustration from the book The World Atlas of Warfare: Military Innovations that Changed the Course of History.[3] The elephant itself uses the Indian elephant model of other units in Age of Empires II with a slightly different stance.
  • The mahout holds an elephant goad.
  • Sannāhya means "war elephant" in Sanskrit.[4]
