This article is about the unit in Age of Empires IV: The Sultans Ascend. For other uses, see Samurai.

Heavy infantry with good damage and defense. Comes with the Deflective Armor ability that periodically blocks attacks.
Age of Empires IV description

The Samurai is a unique heavy melee infantry unit in Age of Empires IV: The Sultans Ascend, available to the Japanese, that replaces the Man-at-Arms. They can be created at the Barracks starting in the Dark Age.

Ability[]

  • Deflective Armor (passive): Blocks one melee or ranged attack, recharges in eight seconds when out of combat.

Unit comparison[]

The Samurai costs 10 gold more than the Man-at-Arms and has the Deflective Armor ability. However, more differences come in when looking at the Japanese as a whole. The Katana Bannerman can boost the Samurai. The Japanese have an extra attack upgrade for melee attacks in the Dark Age.

Tactics[]

The Samurai is mostly comparable to a Man-at-Arms, with the same use-cases and counters. However, the Samurai has a few key advantages. The Deflective Armor ability allows them to negate one attack per battle, allowing for slightly boosted survivability. In some cases, such as against Crossbowmen or Handcannoneers, the damage negated during the initial charge can be significant.

Samurai are much more offensively-oriented than other Men-at-Arm variants. Besides the +1 damage from unique Blacksmith technologies, and an additional 15% damage when supported by Katana Bannermen, Samurai also do an extra +4 against all forms of infantry when upgraded with Odachi, and have a 20% boost to torch damage through Oda Tactics. Samurai are powerful front-line fighters that can threaten a wide variety of units.
