History[]
“
Initially irregular guerrilla troops during the struggle for independence, Mexican Salteadores were elevated from patriotic brigands to a legitimized paramilitary group of vigilantes. Particularly effective in settings where traditional tactics were only marginally effective, Salteadores were a powerful counterpart to the more traditional Soldados.
”
Trivia[]
Salteador is the Spanish for "highwayman", a robber who stoles from travelers.
The Salteador is called deEmboscador in the game files, suggesting that its name was Emboscador (ambusher, in Spanish) before the release of the Mexican civilization.
The Salteador could be inspired by the military forces led by José María Morelos during the second stage of the Mexican War of Independence (1811 - 1815). Unlike the Insurgentes, irregular troops led by Miguel Hidalgo who lacked arms, organization and training, the insurgency under Morelos' leadership used guerrilla tactics, organized their forces and wrote documents that articulated the insurgents' goals.
However, after Morelos' death in 1815, the Mexican insurgency settled into guerrilla warfare during the period between 1815 and 1820, with their main cores in the states of Guanajuato, Jalisco, Estado de México, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Puebla, and Veracruz.
The Mexican forces also used guerrilla tactics against the United States during the Mexican-American War, mainly by recruiting bandits to combat the American army.
National Guard Salteadores' name refers to the vigilantism.
Vigilante is a term borrowed from the Spanish word which means "watchman" or "guard", refering to a member of a "vigilance committee".
